Port Hope High School Plans Additions and Driver Education Boost

The Durham County District High School Board discussed adding permanent classrooms to Port Hope High School due to growing enrollment and a 1000-plus student body. The board also approved a new salary schedule raising pay by 700 to teachers principals and vice principals. Driver education proved successful this year and may expand across schools, though qualified instructors remain scarce. The board accepted the resignation of 10 teachers effective at year end.

Orono Horticulture Notes Flowering Crab Trees and Plans

An Orono Horticultural Society meeting at the Upper C. EB Auditorium opened with O Canada. President O Challice announced Flowering Crab trees planted with two leftovers. one to Jr. Gardeners at Main and Mill. A Centennial Committee helper was appointed. Centenary bed at Curoply planned. Guest Woodstra spoke on Gladioli care and bulb selection.

Orono Centennial Fiddler Contest Prizes Announced

Orono Chamber of Commerce plans a Centennial Old Time Fiddler's Contest at the Orono Rink on Thursday evening July 6. First prize is 50 dollars, second 30, and third 20. Interested entrants should contact Mr. P. M. Lunn as soon as possible.

Douglas Lycett to appear on Hi-Time Show Saturday

Mr Douglas Lycett will appear on Channel 9s Hi Time Show at 3 00 p m Saturday May 13 singing Build A Scaffold Way Up High with Old Zero on Columbia label. The week prior he toured western Ontario to promote the record as it gains radio play and reviews.

Centennial Trees Planted at Lockhart School

On Tuesday April 25 pupils at Lockhart's School planted two Centennial flowering crab trees Almey and Royalty with funds raised by students. They pledged loyalty to Canada and sang national songs. Mrs. Greenwood and Clarke Township Centennial chair Mrs. Fairbrother witnessed. more tree planting planned May 8 and 9 at Orono Reforestry station with Grades 7 and 8, plus trees to be planted at Newtonville Browns Kendal and Orono schools.

Clarke Township Teachers Hold April Meeting at Browns School

Mrs K Lowery president opened the meeting with the Lord's Prayer. Secretary Mrs J Hoy read minutes. Mr Moffat reported on the salary committee. Inspector C Holmes spoke briefly. Moffat outlined Tabloid Sports Day at Kendal on June 15 with teams of fifteen from Grades 4 to 8. Captains and contestants were chosen.

Gas main break floods street during late Tuesday work

While tapping under Main Street at Park Street the Consumers Gas crew struck the 8 inch water main. Water surged and the Newcastle Public Utilities repaired the break by 8 PM. The Orono Fire Department laid hoses to supply area, causing temporary outages in the south section while gas work continued. Dent reports Tuesday water was 75000 gallons above average.

Changes in Orono business scene prompt shifts and openings

The Orono business section sees several moves and openings this month. Mat Snelders now runs his barber shop with a pool room and confectionery store after purchasing from Dane Found. Ann’s Beauty Salon relocates to Main Street near Cornish’s Bed and White. Dr Peter I Maartense opens a dental practice at the Orono Medical Centre after recent graduation with modern equipment.

Newcastle Man Wins NHL Draw

Mr. Pigeon of Newcastle won the Orono Artificial Ice Fund N.H.L. Draw decided by Toronto's Tuesday victory. Ninety eight tickets sold at a dollar each would net the Ice Fund about $450 after expenses and the fifty percent prize.

Meeting on Centennial Week plans in Orono

Tonight Mr. Stirling Mather reports a gathering of all interested in promoting Centennial Week in Orono at 8:00 p.m. in the Council Chamber Township Hall. Attendees are urged including organization representatives who will promote events during the week of July 3rd.

Orono Park Board Invites Attend Centennial Week Events

The Orono Park Board will supply invitations for out of town friends to join the Centennial Week activities. Invitations, including a Beef Bar-B-Q, will be distributed next week by board members so residents can send cards to friends enabling visits to Orono during the centennial celebrations.

Orono Centennial Art Show and Band Concert Planned

The Orono Art Group sponsors a Centennial Art Show during Orono Centennial Week at Orono Park on Sunday afternoon July 9. The Orono Junior Band cooperates by providing a band concert at the same time. The event is open to everyone including children with artworks to display. The Art Group hopes many will participate and has enlisted the Junior Band to assist with the afternoon's activities.
