Bottle Garden Demonstrated By Junior Gardeners Club

The Junior Gardener's Club held its sixth meeting on April 27. Moors Fairbrother showed terrarium planting with moss ferns and violets. Instructions covered soil layers and self watering via a bottle cover. Seedlings and a plant giveaway preceded a May meeting with centerpiece contest and multiple prizes.

Health Unit Backs Fluoridation of Municipal Water

Northumberland Durham Health Unit secretary treasurer A R Griffith tells Cobourg council the board supports the Ontario Fluoridation Investigation Committee. The resolution urges councils to fluoridate public water supplies at about one part per million, citing dental caries prevention, safety, and reasonable cost.

Counties Reject Clarke 6th Line Road Request

The 1961 counties roads program includes 597 500 dollars for urban and rural link maintenance and development. The commission urges cooperation among municipalities to keep links up to standard and notes delays in constructing connecting links. It also discusses extending development roads and requests lower weekly hours offset by wage adjustments while workers forgo further demands for two years.

Group 1 of W.N.L.S. Holds May Meeting in United Church

The regular meeting in the Sunday School Auditorium May 2 was led by Mrs. W E Armstrong. Worship featured Mrs Logan and messages on prayer. Fifty sick calls were reported. eighteen cartons of bedding and clothing were packed May 1. A bake sale tea is planned for May 13 with CGLT girls. Groups 1 and 2 plan a joint June meeting with Group 1 handling the program and tea.

Assessment Increases in United Counties Reach 76 Million

Total taxable assessment across Durham and Northumberland rises to 76 268 753 led by building value at 53 329 870 and land at 18 450 831. Population up to 78 979. 230 appeals heard with net reductions offset by increases. County assessor T Garnet Shields reports. by July 1 equalization bylaw expected.

Guernsey Show Proposed at Orono Fair Annual Plans

The April meeting of the Central Agricultural Safety group held at George Carsons home outlined plans for the Orono fair on September 8 and 9. Tobacco Exhibit and Queen contests were discussed with a May 8 meeting scheduled for exhibitors and fair board members. The Jack and White Show and Guernsey Association show were planned for September 8 and 9 at the Orono fair grounds. Entry forms for Field Crop were to be returned by May 15. No Trespassing rules were adopted to protect the fair grounds and a photo contest was floated for next year’s convention.

Canadian Cross Canada Car Rally Lights Mosport Test Run

Mosport near Orono hosted the first leg of the Cross Canada Car Rally with about 106 entered cars. Teams navigated by route book and IBM check points, earning penalty points for late or early timing as they climbed a muddy hill and tested at Mosport before continuing to Toronto.

Park Board to Complete Orono Swimming Pool Project

The Orono Park Board approved completing the new pool with final financing close to 1300 local dollars needed. A June 23 opening is planned with funds from provincial grants and local canvassing continuing to raise the rest.

Kontinental Car Club Plans Orone Preview

The Kontinental Rod and Custom Club of Oshawa organized in 1959 is staging a preview at the old Flax Mill on Cobb Hill. With over twenty members and 35 cars, the group emphasizes safety and nonprofit aims while preparing cars for drag races and shows in Oshawa Toronto Buffalo. Sponsored by Oshawa Auto Trim and Wilson Battery, the club funds rent and equipment through dues.

Trout season opens with sparse catches and cold weather

The report notes a poor early morning bite as anglers fish at midnight seeking trout. Doug Powell, a local Conservation Officer, cites cold weather for the weak season, with better catches limited to a stream on George Laing's property where an Oshawa Club holds fishing rights and one man reportedly landed a 94-pound rainbow.
