Clarke Orono tax bills rise by 48 dollars this year

Tax increases hit Clarke Township and Orono Village hard. A $3,000 home faces about $43 more in tax, while a $5,000 commercial property rises by around $90. Major hikes stem from higher township and police village mill rates, with roads, schools, and public works driving the totals.

High School Teachers Get Wace Boost

Durham County High School Board will raise teacher and principal pay this year with higher minimums and maximums across four categories. Teacher minimums rise to 6200 6500 7100 and 7500 with corresponding maximums up to 12500. principals climb from 13000 to 18500 and vice principals from 13300 to 15450. The district had 158 teachers last year and expects 170 this year, a gain of 12.

Quint measles vaccine added to immunization drive

Dr. Charlotte M. Horner forwards a note from Medical Offices of Health announcing Quint, a killed measles vaccine combined with diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus and polio protections. Ontario Health Department restricts to official health agencies, via Northumberland Durham Health Unit clinics, with a live attenuated booster later.

Orono Plans Old Time Fiddlers Contest During Centennial Week

The Orono Chamber of Commerce tentatively backs an Old Time Fiddlers contest during Orono Centennial week. Directors met Monday with Bowermanville’s J Coyle and including a potential 4 Western Show. P M Lunn chairs the event committee and the plan aims for Friday July 7.

Centennial Tea and Bake Sale at Orono United Church

A Mother’s Day Centennial Tea and Bake Sale is set for Saturday May 13 at 2 30 p m in the Main Hall of Orono United Church. All welcome to attend with mothers grandmothers and friends in Centennial costumes to help create a gala social event sponsored by CGLT and Units 4 and 5 of the UCW.

U C W General Meeting Highlights Music and Courage

The U C W held a April 20 meeting in the Shureh lower auditorium with Mrs C Chatterton welcoming members and guests. Miss Shelley Battams of Leskard sang in a Kiwanis Festival entry and the program featured devotional music on rain, courage stories, and a film by Henry Willan The Man of Music. A bake sale and clothing drive were announced for May 8 with Unit 7 coordinating purses hats and shoes donations.

More Talent Sought For Orono Centennial Amateur Show

The Orono Amateur Athletic Association sponsors an amateur talent show during Centennial week directed by Mr. Stirling Mather. Six groups have entered and auditions are underway. Mather invites more applicants and notes three or four professional acts will also perform, with top prize money early July.

Orono Police Trustees Plan Parking Signs on Main Street

Orono Police Trustees met Monday with EK Woodyard and D M Simpson. They approved erecting parking signs and painting lines on Main Street. Woodyard to contact Township Road Superintendent M Ross. Chamber of Commerce involvement planned for painting lines. Also discussed water conditions, Ontario Municipal Board inquiry on an $108,000 program, 1967 water operating budget of 2500, capital funds need 19277.94, 1966 fire cost 4540.07, and 1967 road budget of 6500.00 for Orono.
