Orono United Church Building Committee met with architect Mr Tonks of Oshawa and Hanks and Irwin to review revised sketches for a new church. A 850 seat auditorium is planned with basement Sunday School space, kitchen and classrooms. A new site on the old lot is preferred and work to clear rubble should begin soon.
The Durham County Community Auction will operate weekly auctions at their Orono arena replacing a bi monthly schedule. Since inception it served as the buying and selling center for livestock and farm equipment for district farmers. Increased livestock and items require weekly Thursday sales to expose more goods to buyers.
The 24th Annual District Seed Fair at the Armoury Lind say showcased seed, with machinery displays and a six township Carcass competition. Exhibitors from Durham County dominated with multiple championships in fall wheat barley oats and potatoes while auction sales and lectures drew hundreds of local farmers.
A Durham County report warns only 46 percent of the area remains forested, with deforestation causing flooding, soil erosion, and dropped water tables. It urges landowners to reforest, manage woodlots, and restrict cutting, noting wind damage and past high wood prices as accelerants to loss.
Allen Claude Henry of Clarke Township died at his Toronto home on March 19. He lived in Newcastle in youth and worked 35 years for Eaton's Mail Order. Survived by Kathleen Kinch Henry and brothers William and Austin. predeceased by one brother and three sisters. Funeral at Orono Cemetery.
Edwin Spencer Wood died at his Bowmanville home on March 25 at age 77 after a period of ill health. He was a machinist at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. and a longtime Trinity United Church choir member. Survived by his second wife Jean Wright, daughter Eleanor Chambers, sons Archie and Edwin M. Wood, and brother Kenneth Wood. Funeral at Trinity United Church and Bowmanville Cemetery interment.
The Holstein-Friesian Association of Canada East-Central Ontario directors vote to again hold district and provincial shows. Peterboro hosts the district Championship Show around mid October with judge J. D. Innes. Grants rise to 1000 dollars per show with 100 dollars to County Black and White Days. Western Ontario and Ottawa Winter Fair plans uncertain.
The Board of Transport Commissioners for Canada will reopen its order abandoning the CNR line between Port Hope and Millbrook after protests and an application led by the South Monaghan council. A hearing date will be fixed later.
The Department of Lands and Forests cuts speckled trout daily limits to fifteen nationwide and ten in Norfolk County for 1950, keeps seven inch minimum length, and eliminates weight limits. Non-resident licenses rise to 6.50 for individuals and 9.00 for family, with Manitoba residents exempt.
The Orono Police Trustees met March 28 at the Hydro office and announced plans to begin a sidewalk program in April including new sidewalks and repairs. They aim to obtain a provincial fire grant by forming a by law and coordinating with the Volunteer Fire Brigade. Two garbage collection tenders were received and will be decided at a April 12 special meeting.
The Canadian Cancer Society launches a April 1 campaign seeking 300 000 in Ontario to support research education and patient services including free dressings and patient transport. Ontario units operate in 26 centres and funds will expand information centres to further cancer control nationwide.
O C S pupils study for the Haster exams and will rest during the holi days after marks return. Absent students Keith West and Erla Chapman recover from injuries. On March 22 the O C S Literary Society presented Rumours Wanted at Kirby church social. This is the Oasis final edition before Easter with greetings for all.
It is reported that five million dollars will be spent on roads in the Province this spring for repairs caused by thaws and rains. Clarke Township will share the impact as many local roads are now in poor condition or closed due to melting snow and sparse frost.
The Ontario Department of Highways urges drivers to stay alert for children and be ready to stop. Children may not stop to think, so drivers must continually think ahead to prevent fatal accidents.
The Durham Crop Improvement Association hosted the Seventh Annual Durham County Seed Fair in Lindsay with the Quinte Seed Fair March 16 17 18. Judges were S Bowman from Dominion Agriculture Peterborough and Kenneth Failis from Toronto. prize winners include Mel McHolm Alfred Allin Garnet Rickard Robt Armstrong James T Brown Neil Boyd and Milton Weatherill in multiple grain classes.
A cautionary note compares human street behavior to an ostrich burying its head in the sand. It warns that hiding behind clothing or hats can create dangerous false confidence as pedestrians step into traffic and drivers may not react in time.
The Society appeals to Ontario residents for generous support during the April campaign. Contributions may be sent to any local unit of the Cancer Society in Ontario or mailed direct to Station F Toronto.
In Bowmanville a 75 guest celebration marked Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wood’s 40th wedding anniversary at the Sons of England Hall. Daughters and sons in law, Neil Wood and family, and Mrs. Wood’s siblings joined in the tributes with a Tri Light gift, speeches, music, and a decorated cake. Several relatives unable to attend were noted as absent from Ovens.
