Fire destroys Clarke Union home once owned by Heber Souch
The stone house at Clarke Union formerly owned by Heber Souch burned early Saturday. Bowmanville and Orono brigades fought the blaze but water shortages prevented saving the structure. Mr and Mrs Smith escaped with their lives as all other belongings were lost. The fire likely started from an overheated furnace pipe in the cellar. The farm and buildings are now owned by Adams Lumber Company used for tobacco growing.

Durham County Junior Farmers Win Wardens' Trophy
On Friday March 17, fifty four Junior Farmer boys under twenty three from eight counties competed in the Quinte Seed Judging Competition at Lindsay. Durham County won the Wardens Trophy for the twentieth consecutive year with 2341 points, Hastings was second and Ontario third. Team members included Harold Hammond Earle Brown and Donald Taylor with coach E A Summiers. First twenty boys received cash prizes and grain awards. Hammond scored 150 on wheat and Brown 100 on weeds. Individual class winners listed for Weeds George Skelding Wheat Danford McCrae Barley John Geen Alfalfa Merle Moore Red Clover Ian McHachrane.

Three Civil Cases Open Spring Assizes at Cobourg
The spring assizes before Mr Justice Wells opened in Cobourg with three civil actions. Two divorce suits seek money owed on promissory notes, one by William C. Shaw against Helen Shaw of Cobourg and another by Marie Isabel Gartshore of Clarke Township against Norman Gartshore of Whitby. The third suit, by Dawson Beebe of Hope Row p, names Benson Beebe Helen Beebe and Lorenzo Beebe of Oshawa, claiming a loan of 1089 dollars on September 28 1946, with a claim of 951.30 dollars plus interest on 870 dollars.

Patterson Rites Mark Life of Orono Resident
Robert Patterson died March 5 at his daughter’s home in Orono. Born 1870 near Kendal, he spent his life in Clarke Township and married Neta Brown in 1906. In the O H A Junior D semifinals the Orono Orphans lost 10 to 1 to South River in South River on Thursday. Each team had won once, sending the decisive game to determine the finalist. Crono struggled, and South River moved into the finals ending Orono’s Ontario Championship hopes. The contest was one sided and unexciting, marking a quiet close to hockey in 1950 in the community.
