Red Cross Evening Auxiliary Outlines March Meeting

The Evening Auxiliary met March 19 in the Sunday School room with a full attendance. They discussed taking on a nursery with Baby Band Leaders, while mothers may rotate Sunday mornings. Mrs Chater spoke on Red Cross Month and its history and current work including disaster relief and blood donations.

Wade Courtice celebrates 25th wedding anniversary

Mr and Mrs William Wade of Courtice celebrated their twenty fifth wedding anniversary last Saturday at a UAW party. About 150 relatives and friends from Toronto Bowmanville and district attended. Mrs Wade received a corsage from her sons Billy and John and a bouquet from her grand-niece Beverley Heart. Jack McKenney of Toronto was MC and Clarence Hockin of Bowmanville presented an address and gift.

Form Poultry 4-H Club plans 1959 activities

The Durham 4-H Poultry Club met in the Department of Agriculture board room to plan the 1959 poultry club. New club for Durham County draws interest as members decide to buy Dekalb chicks and continue activities with social evening events.

Orono Chamber To Sponsor Colt Stake At Orono

Orono Chamber of Commerce Special Events Committee approves a race meet in Orono on Saturday June 20 at 2 00 pm at the Orono track. The main event is a colt stake with over 30 entrants from Durham Gritario Northumberland Peterborough Victoria Haliburton and Hastings counties. Prize money 500 with a trophy sought. No wagering permitted. Colts field to include kiddies rides and additional attractions planned.

Rebekahs Celebrate 12th Anniversary Lodge Event

The Heather Rebekah Lodge held its regular meeting March 24 1959 at the LO O F Hall with Noble Grand Hattie Wilson officiating and Irene Heron assisting. Attendance was good with one officer absent Inside Guardian and visitors from Port Hope Bowmanville Oshawa Port Perry and Brooklin.

Durham 500 Bushel Club Meets in Bethany March 17

The Durham 500 Bushel Potato Club met in Township Mall Bethany on Tuesday March 17 to discuss the 1959 program. Delbert Olan presided and R E Goodin of the Ontario department of agriculture Toronto gave the highlight on potato past and future quality and supply. Members discussed cooperative marketing, fertilizer types, and continued with the 500 Bushel Club for 1959. Charles Weatherill was elected president for 1959 with A Dalrymple as secretary treasurer.

Teen Agers Hold Evening Service at Orono United Church

An evening service at Orono United Church Sunday was led by the Teen Agers group with a strong turnout. The Orono High School Glee Club supported by singing hymns and providing musical selections under Mr. John Ford who conducted the group. Wayne Bailey opened the service with a call to worship and Miss Mary Found read the scriptures.

Ski Club Holds Dress Carnival Amid Clear Cold Day

Oshawa Ski Club staged its annual costume carnival with blue skies and near zero temperatures. Newcomers wore outfits reflecting native lands while a program of novelty ski races followed costume judging. E Gomme and social committee organized the event with John Preseboskowski, Doug Brock, and Ted McLean drawing laughs in tandem moose costumes.

Millbrook Atom Hockey Team Rules Division in Little NHL Playdowns

The Millbrook Atom Hockey team won the top honours in their division at the Little NHL playdowns held at Camp Borden. They defeated the Orono Atoms to clinch the championship, with Millbrook Pee Wees and Bantams also securing victories during the event.

W C T U Meet Held At Mrs Rowe Home

The regular Women's Christian Temperance Union meeting took place Tuesday afternoon at Mrs Harry Rowe's home. Mrs Walsh opened with Hymn 485 and prayer. Mrs Williams of Oshawa Union spoke reading from St Mark 15. Reports were read, poems shared, and the Bakeless Bake Sale noted. Tea and fruit bread were served.

Orono Trustees Discuss Overnight Parking and Plans

The Orono Police Trustees met discussing overnight parking on Main Street and plans for off-street parking behind the fire hall. They eyed by law enforcement for Main and Mill Streets and planned talks with Lashley and local planning boards, plus village hall and water supply concerns.

CGIT Complete Layettes Books Meeting Report

CGIT group opened by repeating the Purpose. Doreen Alldred Bonnie and Donna Couvier led devotional on racial prejudice. Secretary and treasurer reports shared. Mr Perrin of Kirby knitted two more sweaters for African children, total seven, and offered to knit wool into afghans. Girls finished crafts, played Matthew Mark Luke and John, meeting closed with taps.

Red Cross Campaign Progress in Clarke and Orono

The Red Cross drive in Clarke Township aims for 1000 dollars with Orono leading efforts. Volunteers report funds to Campaign Chairman Mrs. B Rutherford, with final tallies pending. Donations support local needs and the national Society, and a future blood donors clinic is planned to bolster hospital plasma supplies.
