Ice Carnival Delights Sell-out Crowds at Local Arena
The fourth annual Ice Carnival of the Drone Skating Club wowed sell-out crowds on March 10 and 11. Seventy-two skaters aged four to late teens performed fourteen on ice acts with twelve scene runs, featuring drill numbers and elaborate costumes. Nan Unsworth starred in solos, while two boys added variety. The show, a credit to Orono, heads to Bowmanville Arena on March 17 and Cobourg Arena in April.

The Ontario Fertilizer Board notes liquid fertilizers are convenient for house plants but far more expensive than dry options. A gallon of liquid plant food costs about 5 dollars versus 30 cents for the same plant food in dry form, and a ton of 10-5 dry fertilizer runs about 45 dollars compared with over 800 dollars for the equivalent liquid. Federal Grants Fund School Child Health Examinations
The Northumberland Durham Health Unit and the Northumberland Durham Medical Association launch a federal funded program enabling kindergarten and grade one children in United Counties to receive medical exams by their family physicians. A school nurse collects height weight vision and hearing data and sends cards home for physician completion. About 1300 children benefit as parents use the free exam, seen as vital to school performance. The aim is to recheck health in spring using a mobile unit with chest X rays for adults and students eighth grade and up, to cut tuberculosis risk, as 80 percent of early cases have no symptoms.

Attempt To Break Into Bank Of Commerce Fails
The Orono Branch of the Canadian Bank of Commerce faced a third attempted break in on Friday morning March 10. A welding torch and extractor gear were left behind along with tarpaulin sand and cut water pipe. The entry was attempted via the rear coal chute but no vault access occurred before the would‑be robbers fled unseen before daybreak. Bank caretaker William Stainton discovered the scene.

Hoar Injured in No 2 Highway Accident near Hart's Hill
Everett E Hoor, 56, Bowmanville president of Hoar Transport, sustained a compound fracture of the left leg and other injuries when a tractor trailer and four autos collided on No 2 Highway near Hart's Hill shortly after 8 am. He was struck by George Tully who skidded into Hoar as he alighted. He was taken to Bowmanville General Hospital. The crash began as the transport struggled up the hill on a slippery road, blocking traffic and causing multiple collisions.
