Newtonville to Get Street Lights and Snow Plow Upgrades

The Clarke Township monthly session on March 7 discussed installing Newtonville street lights after 43 of 57 property owners consented, with the town paying about 1400 for capital costs and operating costs allocated to the area. Snow plowing concerns urged a permanent highway department arrangement. new equipment is running well, and earlier hired plowing may continue as needed. Insurance for township hall was raised to 25 000 with 1500 contents, and the United Church may use the hall pending a new church. Fox bounty payments of 8 100 per pelt were noted for township revenue.

Speakers Inspire Delegates At WMS Presbyterial

Mrs. A A Outram urged community friendship as the foundation of mission work at Trinity United Church Bowmanville. She cited 6000 Japanese Canadians in the Toronto area needing English and noted the Church of all Nations lacks space to teach. Miss Sybil Courtice urged aid for Japanese and Chinese peoples and spoke of her Japan visit with the Empress.

Council Plans Basement Kitchen Upgrade

Mr Davy notes pelts must be green. A new kitchen will begin in the hall basement soon. Councillors doubt completion this year but will pursue a modern kitchen approach. The meeting adjourned.

Public School Parents Enjoy Musical Program At Orono

Parents of Orono Public School pupils attended a Tuesday afternoon program from 2 15 to 4 00 pm. Mr Neil Stewart directed songs and folk dances with Mrs Lynch and Miss Foster assisting. Students received awards while the Bowmanville Canadian Club and Orono Women’s Institute supported donations, and Mr Stewart gave a violin lesson for the audience.

Canvassers Rally For Red Cross Drive In Orono

The Red Cross canvass for Orono and vicinity advances with canvassers named in Orono including Mrs. W J Lycett and Mrs. H W Murray and W E Armstrong. Orono Band Plans Concert And Dance For April 28

The Orono Band schedules a concert and dance on April 28 featuring martial music, a vocal quartet, comedy numbers, and a master of ceremonies. Proceeds will pay off 1500 for band uniforms as the ensemble debuts new music and attire under M J Tamblyn.

Top price went to Strat haven Sovereign Regent at $480 to Richard Schleissner Jerseyville. Multiple cows and heifers sold to producers in Ontario and Pennsylvania. overall herd categories ranged from milking cows to calves with varied prices.

1953 Plowing Match Set for United Counties

The 1953 International Plowing Match will be held in the United Counties of Northumberland and Durham Ontario as announced by the Ontario Plowing Association. A site near Plainville Lakeshore Road or west of Welcome is considered with a 700 acre block including 350 acres plow land.

Information On Smelt Fishing Licenses In Ontario

The Department of Lands and Forests at Toronto outlines smelt fishing for personal use. Resident smelt seine licenses allow a net up to thirty feet by six feet or a dip net up to six by six feet, valid March through May for a fee of one dollar. Without a license, a three foot dip net with a maximum diameter of thirty six inches is allowed for personal use.

Orono Skating Club Ice Carnival to Dazzle Audience

The Orono Skating Club stages its fourth annual Ice Carnival in the Orono Arena this Friday and Saturday March 10 and 11. Seventy two fancy skaters will perform fourteen acts across twelve month themed scenes with costumes and music. Proceeds support the United Church Building Fund.

Orono Orphans Win Eastern Ontario Championship in OT

The Orono Orphans defeated Lyndhurst 4 2 in overtime to clinch the Eastern Ontario Junior OHA title and advance to the semi finals. Hamilton and Dean West scored in regular time with West adding another in OT while Raye West also scored. A 350 crowd witnessed the thrilling game at Orono Arena.
