Orono Red Cross relinquishes its branch charter amid dwindling local interest. Ontario Division official confirms continued Red Cross services for Clarke Township via Bowmanville branch and a new local swimming club. Emergency aid, loan equipment, water safety, nursing classes, and volunteer opportunities expand under the reorganized program.

Orono Couples Club Attends Kedron Doubles Club Evening

The Orono Couples Club enjoyed a evening with the Kedron Doubles Club featuring Paul Greenveld Chuck Hutton and Lest Aslett. Bernice Chapman showed slides of a Passion Play in Germany and American productions in South Dakota and Florida. The gathering included Saint Patrick’s Day decor games contests and a presentation to Mr and Mrs D Barnett who will soon move to Kedron.

New Post Office For Newcastle

Ottawa reports the federal government plans a Newcastle post office with an estimated 30000 dollars. Public Works in Ottawa is preparing plans and specifications for the new building and expects construction tenders to be called this spring with work starting next summer.

District Credit Union Declares Dividend After Annual Meeting

The Orono and Distreit Credit Union held its annual meeting in Grono with Mr. Glenn Ray croft of Toronto speaking on credit unions. Four of five retiring officers were re elected, new board member Mrs Bob Allin. Membership rose to 144 as capital grew from 23403 in 1962 to 25344.62 in 1963. 3 percent dividend to existing shares amounts to 3s or overlap. Mr C Gilkes of Newcastle re elected president. Robert Allin vice president. A Perrin secretary.

Clay Pigeons Popular at The Crone Fish and Hunt Club

The Crone Fish and Hunt Club held a March shoot with hundreds of shotgun rounds and friendly rivalry. Clubhouse warmth and coffee by the Ladies Auxiliary kept participants cheerful. An evening session in the Municipal Building included a brief meeting and a shooting equipment demonstration by Mr. R. M. Bow.

Long-serving Orono official among 25 Ontario hydro awardees

A Village of Orono official received a long-service Hydro Award after 15 years on the Hydro System. He was among 25 municipal utility commissioners honored by the Ontario Municipal Electrical Association at a joint annual event in Toronto on March 3. The group has a combined 405 years of service.

Newell Faces Tobacco Growers Over Surplus Crisis

At a meeting in Orono on Wednesday night P G Newell district director of the Ontario Flue Cured Tobacco Marketing Board argued the surplus and price fluctuations are the main causes of growers’ protests. Growers questioned board actions while Newell outlined investigations by government economists and noted a large crop with 80 million pounds more than last year as the market battles a shutdown.
