Orono Chamber Debates Rink Funds and Civic Projects

The Orono Chamber of Commerce held a long meeting with 14 members present. Officers reported a rink fund deficit of about 787 dollars after transfers and expenses while promising future work on fireproofing and a potential five thousand dollar credit. Committees discussed store hours, parking, dog control, township hall cleanup, and street improvements. They approved a Carnival for August 19 and a Colt Stake harness race on June 20, and explored forming an industrial investment group and hospital feasibility in Clarke Township.

Plan For Orone Guide Banquet March Meeting

The Local Association of Girl Guides met at Mrs. Norman Allin's home with seven members. Officers announced Mrs. Gilbart's resignation as District Commissioner and discussed Guide Conference in Toronto April 2–3 and hosting a mother and daughter banquet around March 31 or April 1. A lunch followed and April meeting was planned at Mrs. Gladys Gamsby's home.

Debate Sub division Control At Chamber Meeting

At the Orono Chamber of Commerce meeting Thursday evening an hour long discussion considered Sub division Control. R R Waddell argued the present by law could be repealed and replaced with a properly passed measure. He warned the by law would hinder growth in Orono by requiring 15 000 square foot lots without public water or sewage. He favored keeping control only in surrounding areas where land is plentiful and noted several houses could not have been built under the current rule. E H Samuel supported enforce of the by law to aid orderly building. H M Mercer said most of the village is developed and little impact would be felt. Continued on page 8.

Twin Oaks Motel Acquired by Toronto Couple

The Twin Oaks Motel on Highway 115 south of Orono is under new management. Jack and Calombe Keon of Toronto purchased it from Fred Barnard and took possession in March. Mrs Keon retains interest in her Toronto store.

Heather Rebekah Lodge Holds March Meeting and Catering Plans

Heather Rebekah Lodge No. 334 met at CCF Hall on Tuesday March 10 with Sister Hattie Wilson presiding and Sister Elizabeth Cornish standing in for the Vice Grand. Five officers were absent as reports covered Benevolent duties catering for Beaver Lumber Orono and a High School commencement. plans for a May Masonic Dinner and a March 24 birthday program were announced.

The March meeting of the Women’s Annuals group in Orono was chaired by Mrs H Allen. Devotional duties included a Scripture reading, a solo, and an inspirational story. Resignations and appointments were discussed, plus planning for a smorgasbord and a two day Five Oaks trip. A guest speaker Mrs C Ives of Bowmanville spoke as president of the Presbytery.
