Ratepayers to Again Vote on Township Public School Debenture

Clarke Township council deadlocked over public school area. Debenture for two new two room schools eyed at 75000 dollars to be raised, with Newtonville and No 9 section sites. Withdrawal petitions and by law notices debated. next vote planned, roadworks and officials assigned.

Orono School Board plans new room and extra teacher

The Orono Public School Board met Tuesday to advertise for one extra permanent teacher for the coming year. An additional room will open in September, with a special meeting to reconvert the north base. Once drawings are finished, tenders will be invited to complete the project before September 1.

Gerald Brown Elected Durham County Junior Farmers President

Gerald Brown was elected president of the Durham County Junior Farmers Association at a banquet and dance in Newcastle. Officers include Don Green as vice president and secretary Bob Carruthers, with Jim Coombes as treasurer and Ed Kowal as program director. Past president Ren Brooks recalled the year’s growth, including a bus trip to Ottawa and a new award night, and noted plans to improve field day and choir efforts.

Orono United Church Forms Special Committee

A Special Committee was created at an official Orono United Church board meeting to survey all adherents in Orono and assess Sunday School needs. The board urged attendance and active church involvement and voted funds to aid the Presbytery extension fund. Consideration is given to two new United Churches in Oshawa and Whitby.

Hi-Teens Dance This Saturday at Town Hall

Hi-Teens invite teens and families to a Saturday night dance at the Town Hall. New records will be added to the collection, and admission is fifty cents. Organizers seek support to avoid another financial loss and possible closure.

Presbytery W A Met At a Luncheon

Thirty members of the Oshawa Presbytery Woman's Association met at Northminster United Church for a buffet luncheon. Mrs E D Cornish opened with a poem, hymns were played by Mrs C A Naylor, and reports were read by several officers. Delegates named for Bay of Quinte Conference in Brighton on May 4.

WMS Presbyterial Report Highlights March Meeting

Mrs. V Robinson reports on the WMS Presbyterial held in Oshawa and the Hat Piplia mission work in India. The afternoon featured a devotional by Group 4, an Easter meditation, India and Canada mission talks, and a CGIT supply effort for Hong Kong. The Newcastle auxiliary Easter meeting was announced for March 24 with speaker Mrs Merrill Ferguson.

Seed judging crown goes to Lorne Tink in Durham

Lorne Tink of Hampton topped the first annual seed judging contest conducted by the Durham County extension branch with 787 of 855 points. John Sanderson of Bailieboro was runner up with 785 points as judges identified 20 mounted weeds 15 grasses and clover and evaluated grain seeds. A Durham team led by Tink was chosen to represent the county at the Central Ontario Spring Show in Peterborough on April 7.

Don Lake Tops Skeet Marksmen at Orone Club

During February the Orone Fish and Hunt Club Skeet season drew 15 to 25 shooters weekly. Don Lake led with 70 percent, followed by W. Reid 62, J. Duvall 61, W. Lake 60, and G. Hancock 58 in a compiled month of scores.

Orono United Church CG group meets with plan for May 3 graduation

The Orono United Church CG group met Monday March 1 with strong attendance. The meeting reviewed the CGLT purpose and heard reports from the secretary and treasurer. A tentative May 3 graduation service date was set and members discussed layette project and devotional theme on racial prejudice. Agricultural judging and seed identification competitions were led by local representatives including Japs Brown Victoria County, Sidney McDonald Hastings County, Herb Norrey Peterborough County, Bruce Taylor Enniskillen, and Mr Dalrymple with assistance from Leroy.

Orono Considers Community Investment Corporation for 10000 Sq Ft Plant

A group of ten in Orono met at the Hydro Office to discuss forming a Community Investment Corporation to finance and build a 10 000 square foot plant. The project would lease for ten years with option to purchase, hire about 20 staff initially and grow to 50 within 2 3 years, and issue shares with 6 7 percent interest.
