Congregation Approves Rebuilding Park St Church After Fire

More than one hundred members at Orono Township Hall voted to rebuild the Park St Church. A building committee was named to study plans and costs, with estimates ranging from 50 000 to 75 000 dollars and insurance totaling 32 000 dollars.

Doucett Announces Immediate Start On 2A To Newcastle

Ontario Highway Minister George Doucett announced at the Ontario Good Roads Association meeting in Toronto that Highway 2A will be expanded east from Oshawa to Newcastle and then to Port Hope with an immediate start expected this year. He outlined plans for a connecting link to Highway 7 near Peterborough and a broader eastward network to the Quebec border, plus a western Ontario link to Windsor and an eastern swing toward Stratford Kitchener Guelph and Grape areas, with surveys pending.

Continuation School Holds Successful Commencement in Orono

The annual commencement in Town Hall Orono featured a choir performance led by Neil Stewart and Rev A E Hustace as chair. Certificates diplomas and awards were presented to numerous intermediates and seniors by various presenters including Rev Eustace, Dr J C Devitt, and Mrs A A Drummond.

Appeal to Oshawa United churches to aid Orono fire church

An appeal led by Rev. W. W. Patterson calls United Church congregations in Oshawa Presbytery to help Park Street United Church Orono after a February 19 fire. Donations include hymn books as the Orono congregation uses St Saviour's Anglican Church for services while rebuilding. Rev. E Donovan Jones plans to visit churches in March to promote the relief effort.

Constable Pollard Transferred to Peterborough District

Constable Russ Pollard left his Orono post on March 1 and was transferred to Peterboro headquarters. He served six and a half years across Durham County towns Bowmanville Port Hope Newcastle and Orono, praising the district and its friendships. Mrs Pollard will stay in Orono until accommodations are arranged.

Red Cross Drive in Clarke Township March

The Community Red Cross Drive in Clarke Township invites donations during March. The drive funds local aid such as cod liver oil capsules for public school pupils and summer swimming classes. It notes national blood transfusion and veteran aid efforts and lists Mr. W J Riddell as a donation site with canvassers announced.

World Day Of Prayer Held At St Saviours

The annual World Day of Prayer service was observed at St Saviour’s Anglican Church Parish Hall on Friday afternoon. Mrs. M. H. Staples led the service with theme Faith of Our Time, supported by a slate of assistants and musical contributions from Mrs. Cecil Jones, Mrs. C. E. Miller, and others.

Orono Church Fire Aid Campaign Aimed at Radio Audience

The Orono congregation plans a relief drive led by Rev. Andrew E. Eustace to broadcast an appeal for aid after a destructive fire. The rebuilt church will require heavy funding as insurance did not cover losses, following a recent $25,000 renovation. About 40 United churches in the Oshawa Presbytery may join the effort to support Orono.

On Friday March 3 the Orono Fish and Hunt Club hosts a town hall dance for members and guests. Members with tickets admit free with their partner. nonmembers may buy tickets at the door and enjoy dance and basement card games.

Mission Circle Meeting Hears Bible Talks and Temperance Plans

The Mission Circle and Junior Mission Band met at the Masonic Hall on Tuesday February 28 with 23 members present. Mrs Armstrong led with hymn singing before the juniors recited Psalms and discussed Africa in a Bible story. The seniors covered temperance and cocktails, then a Bible Quiz and study on the Gospel’s global need.

Presbyterial report outlines overseas needs and gifts

The 1949 Presbyterial outlines urgent needs for overseas missionaries including new buildings and cars, with a requested $60 000 if required. A surplus of $1 900 from Oshawa Presbytery is noted, and the division plan allocates $700 000 to missions, $60 000 for cars, and $600 toward rebuilding a Japan high school for 1 000 girls.

Orono Orphans win first playoff game in Gananoque

The Orono Orphans beat Lyndhurst 4 to 3 in the opening D group playoff at Gananoque. A second game is set for Friday March 8 at 8:30 in the local arena as the teams bid for advancement.
