Durham Hog Producers Told Of Profits In Their Field

The Durham County Hog Producers Association held its annual meeting at Orono Town Hall on February 20 with about forty members present. President Leonard McNeil spoke on a successful year and discussed a boar project, costs of production, and market outlook. Guest speaker R Graham cited average hog costs at 116.40 per hundred pounds and a practical $10 profit per hog after expenses, urging continued investment and stable grain prices. Officers for 1950 were elected and a County Cream Producers Association was formed afterward.

Improvement In Co op Here Boosts Farmer Members

The annual meeting of the Durham Farmers County Co operative reported a stronger financial position. President Clarence Allin praised the staff and policy shifts including a 1% cash discount and efforts to reduce accounts receivable funded by bank loans. Manager E J McGarrity outlined future policies to cut handling costs and enhance capital, while auditor H Harris noted improved net savings from 0.1% to 3.1% and proposed patronage refunds up to 38% as assets reached $1,? million with 193,803.56 in sales and a 6,080.02 net saving.

Evening Auxiliary Celebrates Third Birthday Party

The Evening Auxiliary hosted a birthday party last Thursday in Park St United Church Sunday School. Guests, including the W. M. S. afternoon Auxiliary, enjoyed a programme with readings, prayers, and a slide show of Mrs Bartlett’s West Coast trip and Alaska trip. A daffodil centerpiece and birthday cake drew guests as Mrs. Harold Allen and Mrs. M. H. Staples poured tea and the group shared lunch.

Federal Grant Supports United Counties Health Programs

Federal funds via Ontario health grants support part time medical assistants for Northumberland Durham and a sanitary inspector for Bruce County health units. Courses for public health nurses and hospital accountants are funded, with four three day hospital accounting sessions planned and four two day regional child care conferences for nurses. About 150 attend the accounting courses and 118 attend the conferences to study family health services and child development.

Congregational Meeting Called For Monday February 27

The Official Board of Park St United Church invites members to an 8 pm meeting in Orange Hall Orono to approve starting plans for a new United Church after the fire destroyed the previous building. Community involvement is urged.

Orono Continuation School Plans Commencement

Orono Continuation School will hold its commencement in the Town Hall on Friday February 24 at 8 00 pm delayed by weather and illness. Prizes medals and diplomas will be presented. Mr Stewart has a songs program and students practice polka steps and forward rolls amid a light hearted finish.

Members Enlightened in School Health Plan

The Women s Institute held a Friday meeting to approve donations of five dollars to the Public School and eight dollars to the High School for prizes. Dr Horner, head of the Durham wealth unit and former Toronto graduate, spoke on the 1950 public health program including school nursing, mass tuberculosis surveys, and mobile units.

Fire destroys renovated Park Street United Church in Breno

Fire at Park Street United Church Breno on Sunday afternoon leveled the recently renovated building. Estimated loss runs to around 80,200 with no injuries reported as caretakers and parishioners watched flames consume the structure, parsonage saved, fire brigades from Orono and Newcastle assisting.
