Junior Gardeners Building Bird Houses

The Junior Gardeners meet after poor weather with good attendance. Julie Schmid shows a prize winning record book as members receive new membership cards. Points awarded for attendance badges presence and bringing in new members. A third bird house is planned and poster making using seeds with cash prizes for top posters. Orono Camera Club Sees Photo Workshop in March Meeting

The Orono Camera Club met at the Orono Municipal Centre with good attendance. Klaas Shoenmaker discussed filter use and members shared slides. The next meeting is Wednesday March 7 at 7 30 p m at the same venue with Mr Miller from Oshawa High School lecturing on composition and colour harmony. The club welcomes new members.

Growers To Vote On Unsold Tobacco Levy

Four thousand Ontario tobacco growers will vote March 3 on a two cent per pound levy to buy process and store unsold tobacco. A two thirds majority is required. The Ontario Flue-Cured Tobacco Growers Marketing Board aims to shield against no sale tobacco with government backing and a bank loan guarantee.

Orono Skating Club Holds Annual Ice Show

The Orono Figure Skating Club hosted its annual ice show drawing about two hundred spectators for a 75 minute program featuring sixty skaters. Junior and senior groups performed routines including clowns, spirals and spins, with solos and a finale of group numbers and a pro performance. Public skating followed the show.

February Clarke district teachers gathered at News Castle School despite heavy snow to hear Mr. Witherspoon outline the new secondary education system. The ice show featured Linda Thompson and Karen Lee in twosome, Cheryl Cooper solo, clowns Gary Cooper Gary MecMackin Cliff Long and Bill Reid, Intermediates as Snowmen and Seniors performing Can Can, with MC Mr. Hutton and gifts presented by Gail Cooper and Mrs Doug Powell.

Orono Village trustees discussed funding for a more adequate street lighting system with Orono Hydro and plan a special meeting to review costs. They debated banning horses, enforced by health department input, and approved steps to enforce dog by law with March 15 start.

Departments Preparing For Oreno Exhibition

The Needlecraft Committee of the Durham Central Agricultural Fair met at Mrs. Carl Billings home to revise the Fair Prize List. Mrs. Ross Gilbart and Mrs. Francis Jose discussed insights from a Toronton Agriculture Convention and proposed a separate exhibitor section for Clarke and Darlington townships to boost local participation. They plan to print the section locally to give exhibitors time to start their projects.

Badminton tournament sponsored by the Boys' Athletic Society at the Armouries ends with Ralph Kennedy and Gordie Simpson undefeated champions. A Friday skating party at Crono Arena features races led by Barraball siblings. Commencement is planned for March ninth. Glee and Drama Clubs practice with guest speaker Mr Leal, Dean of Osgoode Hall.

Port Hope Tel Company Extends Dial to Clarke and Beyond

Port Hope Telephone Company plans full dial service by August 1963 except Garden Hill. By then Hope and Clarke Townships including Newtonville will gain dial, with 828 of 1318 phones already dial. Projected cost near 100000 dollars includes a new dial office at Clarke. long distance dialing via Direct Distance Dialing will expand to Bowmanville Oshawa and beyond as upgrades proceed.
