Durham County Federation of Agriculture Meeting Notes 1962

The regular Directors Meeting of the Durham County Federation of Agriculture took place at the Trading Post on Thursday March 1 1962. A questionnaire will be sent with the April meeting notice. The Poultry Committee was formed with one member per township including Darlington Ronald Brooks chair Cavan Tom McCamus Manners Lawrence Staples Cartwright Merrill Van Camp Clarke Raymond Chaphian Hope Lorne White. A report from the one week Leadership Training School in Midgard Falls was presented. Ronald Welsh was praised for active 4 H work. Garnet Rickard was asked to attend next members meeting to speak on Education Assessment resolution. Earl Bradshaw spoke briefly on Farm Liability and policy benefits.

Durham District seeks 27 more high school teachers for September

The Durham District High School Board plans to hire 27 additional teachers for September across four of its five high schools, raising staff to over 100. Port Hope and Clarke high schools need the most, with eight and thirteen positions respectively, including new vocational wings. Courtice and Bowmanville require fewer, while Millbrook adds none. May 31 is deadline for current teachers to notify intentions.

Kiddies Saturday Reading Class Attendance Grows

Last Saturday at 10 30 a m in the Municipal Building 28 pupils and 28 attendees joined a Story Hour run by two Ranger members Diane Gilbart and Vicki Cotter. The group will continue with three Rangers next time and children may phone a favorite book to join. Vicki Cotter signs thanks to Miss B Cain for promoting the programme.

R C Honey to Speak at Clarke Meeting

Russell C. Honey, Liberal candidate for Durham in the upcoming federal election, will speak at the Clarke Township Liberal Association annual meeting at Oddfellows Hall Orono on March 20. Association president Harry Wade announced the event which will include officer elections and Durham Liberal Campaign Committee reports.

Stolen Cash At Port Hope Hotel Break In

Port Hope police investigated a break in at the Queen’s Hotel where William Winddyka reported theft of about 185 in cash and 220 in checks from a cash register. The owner said doors were secured and he was away for roughly ten minutes during a hotel meeting.

Township declines water agreement for Orono village

The Clarke Township council on Tuesday rejected signing a proposed Ontario Water Resources Commission water system agreement for Orono village. Reasons cited include future incorporation issues, a 1960 referendum result, and not committing large capital outlay before corporation status is resolved.

Orono High Set For Last Commencement Friday

Orono High School plans its final commencement on Friday March 9 with awards and diplomas. Guest speaker is H Allan Leal Dean of Osgoode Law School Toronto and valedictorian Roma Glanville will deliver the address. The Giveciub and Drama Club will perform then a reception for graduates and guests.

Orono Chamber Proposes Tourist Information Booth on Highway 115

Orono Chamber of Commerce met with twenty members to discuss opening an information booth at Highway 115. The Diana Motel would run it with literature on Orono. Prices for a sign were authorized for next meeting approval. A 24 hour season opening was proposed. The group also discussed park plans, power bills, a hockey event, and support for an Antique Car Association tour through Orono July 10–11.

Outdoor setting with spruce trees and live animal specimens framed the Couples Club gathering. Ross and Merle Gilbart led the devotional as Doug Powell showcased two films on third migration and White Tail Deer in colour.

The second annual Dominion A I Invitational Holstein Sale on February 13 at Oakville sold 30 head for 1 total of 17 850 averaging 595 each. Glen Rae General Rosafe the top buyer’s cow fetched 2 300 from TM% B Seedhouse of Dane Hill Acres Uptergrove Ontario.

Percy Werry Again Heads Orono District Credit Union

The Orono District Credit Union held its annual supper meeting on February 26 at Oddfellows Hall with 40 members and guests. Percy Werry presided as president, with Rene La Chapelle of Cuna Mutual as guest speaker. Officers elected for 1962 include Werry as president and Gus Loucks as treasurer, with total membership at 186 and assets of $20,000.
