Orono Skating Carnival Shines Despite Attendance Dip

The Orono Figure Skating Club staged its eighth annual Skating Carnival over two nights drawing about 375 spectators. The show featured solo and group numbers with precision skating and costumes, highlighted by Miss Mary Found and Heather Ruthford in solos and Douglas Lycett as ringmaster. The event credited the club, its executive, pros and helpers, with a sweeping entertainment success despite lower attendance due to illness and travel conditions.

District High School Budget Increases For Municipality

A Bowmanville special meeting of the Durham District High School Finance Committee and local councils reviewed the Area budget for the year. Total expenditures exclude debentures run about 430 449 with provincial receipts near 240 000 leaving 190 000 from local property taxes. Clarke Township share is about 20 425 06 plus 10 090 debenture costs totaling 30 515 to be collected, compared with 18 866 paid in 1955.

Orono Bush Team Knocks Off Newcastle 3 2 In Final Series Opener

Carman Cornish scored twice and Ed Couroux added a goal to lift Orono to a 3 2 victory over Newcastle in Newcastle Tuesday evening. The win opens the league final series and follows Orono’s earlier elimination of Newtonville from the playoffs.

Mission Band Observes Brotherhood Week

The Mission Band holds Brotherhood Week events with worship, scripture, roll call, and collection. Cathy Hacey performs a piano solo and reads a story titled The Boy with the Busy Walk. Five members read poems, Mary Lynn Bailey leads a prayer, and World Friend papers are distributed.

Township Spelling Finalists to Compete This Saturday

Clarke Township held a spelling bee with contestants from eighteen schools. Norman Rickaby of Orono won, with Gerald Hallowell of Crooked Creek second. They will compete on March 3 at Oddfellows Hall in Orono at 3 p.m.
