Clarke Township Council Backs Pay Increases and Requests

The Clarke Township Council at its March 1956 meeting increased pay for road staff and the clerk while approving a road site survey and a $25 grant to the Orono Horticultural Society. They debated dump site concerns on lot 16, con 2 Newcastle, rabies measures, and a 1956 warble fly campaign with spraying at 20 to 35 cents per head.

Orono Teams Enter Little NHL Playdowns at Memorial Arena

On March 7 two Orono teams the Bantams and Pee Wees sponsored by the Orono Amateur Athletic Association will play in Bowmanville Memorial Arena. The Bantams meet Newcastle in the round robin while the Pee Wees face an all star Bowmanville squad.

Crono Hockey3Team Wins Bush League Championship

Orono clinches the Bush League title at Neycastle arena after sweeping Newcastle 2–0 in a best of three. Johnny Shetler scored four goals in the decisive game to total nine for the match, with Carman Cornish and Chuck Hutton adding two goals each and Hamilton Boyd adding one. The Newtonville team, previously leading the regular season, fell in the first playoff round.

Co operative In Seventh Year Attains New Record Of Sales

The Durham County Farmers Co operative held its seventh annual meeting in Orono, reporting a 1955 sales total of 211,682 dollars with a 5.6 percent net saving of 11,806 dollars. Two hundred shareholders attended the banquet, with two new trucks and a grinder bought for the mill. Sales for 1956 rose by 7,000 in the first two months, and members were urged to place orders in advance to curb delivery delays.

Federation Charters Bus To Toronto Mass Meeting

Federation of Agriculture invites farmers and the public to a Toronto mass meeting on March 18 at Haton's Auditorium to press for marketing legislation. A free bus leaves Port Hope at 8:00, Newcastle 8:30, Bowmanville 8:45 daily, returning each evening. Contact local Federation reps for reservations.

W M S Plans Easter Church Service Speakers

The W A and W M S met Tuesday afternoon in the Sunday School room. Mrs. A E Armstrong of Toronto will speak at the church service on Sunday April 8 after returning from travels in Japan and Korea. Group three led the study on Along the Pacific Coast with remarks on Pauline Johnston.

Orono School Board Meets On Space And Hiring Issues

The Orono School Trustees met to discuss space needs with the Durham District High School Board regarding temporary accommodation for one year. They considered advertising for new teachers as no contracts were signed, and re hired H. E. Millson as secretary treasurer with a $50 raise. They also approved a purchasing policy with local merchants and planned March 14 registration for new first term students.

Orono Public School held its annual Open House Tuesday afternoon with teachers and students guiding parents through three school rooms. Senior room students presented a reader with character portrayals for visiting guests.
