Orono Colt Derby Honors Awarded At Orono Park Race

Miss Orono presented the Colt Trophy to Lawrence Hooey for Agate the top winner with Bill Hooey driving. Agate set 2.15 4/5 in the final heat as Glen Todd and Sunday May Grattan placed second and third. Larry Dillard posted the day’s fastest 2.14 2/5 in consolation. Attendance neared seven hundred as 22 colts competed, with warm weather, band music, and a kiddie ride adding to the event’s success. Proceeds netted 86 dollars plus 102 dollars in prizes for Orono Street Fair on August 19.

OHS Students Tour Ottawa

Thirty senior O H S students traveled to Ottawa on a CP R coach from Bowmanville with teachers Mr Wait Mr Ford and Miss Hobbs. They stayed at the Lord Elgin Hotel and toured the National Museum Parliament Buildings and Grounds the House of Commons Speaker Michiner Prime Minister Diefenbaker and Leader Lester B Pearson were noted. Evening free time included Splash party at the Chateau Laurier and visits to the Art Gallery and shopping district.

High School Board Stands Firm To Hold School Area Together

The Millbrook board met June 17 1959 with twelve members present approving May minutes and a consultative committee recap. The Property Committee may plan summer work at Port Hope High School and prepare a parking lot proposal for July. Bowmanville committee may buy machinery for a 3800 vocational course. Accounts totaling 5250 were approved. A driver training report was reviewed and the board halted further action for now. Resignations from A B Key and H Johanson of Port Hope were accepted. Teacher appointments were confirmed for Bowmanville Port Hope Millbrook Orono and Port Tippe. The board released options on two Millbrook properties for school sites.

Orono Red Cross Park Swimming Course Opens July 2

An executive Orono Red Cross meeting reports plan to run a park swimming course from July 2 to July 31 with Miss Mary Ann Armstrong teaching. Registration 50 cents, daily sessions noon to about 3 pm. Efforts planned for pool cleanliness and safety equipment, including a permanently kept resuscitator, and a cod liver oil order for next year.

Meeting Tonight Re rono Scouting

The Boy Scout Group Committee thanks Mr and Mrs Sid Barraball for donating neckerchiefs to the 1st Orono Scout Troop. A meeting of interest to scouting supporters is planned at the Municipal Building at 8 30 pm with Mr A L Jackson speaking. Proceeds from the June 13 paper drive totaled 13 00.

Eight Entries Planned for Orono One-Act Festival

The Orono Players announce eight entries for the Fair Festival with Oshawa Little Theatre as the latest addition. Desmond Bailey of Oshawa directs the entry, and an extra evening may be added with adjudicator James Dean of Toronto to aim for three evenings of three plays. Miss Madeline Tooley selects May Eve by Ann Cleveland for casting.

Tuberculin Tests Conducted in Orono Over Two Days

Close to 1400 tuberculin needle tests were given in Orono last Thursday and Friday under the Northumberland Durham Tuberculosis Association and Ontario Health. On Thursday 791 were tested and 595 on Friday. This week on Monday and Tuesday the participants returned for readings. over 800 X rays were taken for those testing positive or over forty years old.

Park Recreation Program Opens July 6 At Orono Park

Over fifty children have registered for the summer recreation program sponsored by the Orono Amateur Athletic Association at Orono Park. The four week program starts Monday July 6 and runs weekdays 9 to 12 with assembly at the Orono Municipal Building. Mrs. Marvin Lunn leads the effort and extra volunteers are welcome.

Elizabethan Age Topic Delights Orono United Church Auxiliary

The Evening Auxiliary met June 18 in the Orono United Church Sunday School Auditorium. Dorothy Watt opened the meeting. Rev. Philip Romeril spoke on The Elizabethan Age noting Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria, and changing British society. A vote favored remaining as is until federation in 1962. a Whitby leadership course was discussed. Dorothy Watt was honored at the close with a gift.

No Increase In Trustee Mill Rate In 7.5 Budget-Year

Orone Police Trustees on Monday retained a 7.5 mill rate with no increase despite a near zero year end surplus. They reviewed the year’s budget, noted underspending in engineering and road projects, and planned sidewalk and drainage work along Park Street and Station Street. A meeting with the Fire Chief was set to address rubbish fires and fire protection fees.

Overcrowding At Orono High Curtails Grade Nine Options

A Clarke Township letter to seven area schools warns that Orono High may not offer Industrial Arts and Home Economics to Grade 9 students this September. It cites Bowmanville High School overcrowding as the cause and notes plans for equal education opportunity, with promises to reinstate options when possible.
