In a local election, Alex Carruthers clinched a two vote majority amid a small voter turnout. The race drew limited participation and limited detail in the final tally.
Report notes continued support for the Conservative party as provincial confidence measures progress. The record shows party members maintaining backing during the vote, indicating stable political support in the province.
On Wednesday the Orono Police Trustees and their consulting engineers Marshall Macklin Monaghan and representatives of the Ontario Water Resources Commission discussed village water problems. A draft plan to supply part of the south village from a new well with capacity for about 1000 homes was requested, with a draft expected in two weeks.
Orono Public School seniors in grades 7 and 8 organized a bake sale and afternoon tea to fund a class trip. They had previously raised 19 dollars and, after Wednesday night sales, reportedly reached 38 dollars, enabling the trip.
James A. Grunerud, former Mapleton High School principal, completes PhD at UC Berkeley in Public School Administration. He will teach at St. Cloud State College, Minnesota, starting September with wife Muriel Morton, daughter of George Morton of Orono.
The June meeting of the W A held in the United Church Sunday School room with 13 ladies present. Mrs H Allen presided as chair. Devotional by Mrs Long centered on Prayer with readings and hymns. Strawberry supper planned for June 24 with pork and potato salad and desserts. Treasurer noted 25 dollars donated to Red Cross and balance 518 75. Five C G L T girls to camps to receive 35 dollars. W A to join W M S for July 7 picnic at Mrs W Armstrong home.
The Orono Junior Girls Softball team posted a strong win over Boatmanville as Sharon Willis pitched and went on base with Gail Willis and Christine Maartense leading hitting. Orono lineup included Sharon Willis pitcher Gail Willis catcher Barbara Keast Troy Taggart J McMackin Christine Maartense Diane Gilbart Faye Nicholson L Pears Marie Hooey Mary Lynn Bailey Linda Tyrrell Judy Wagg L Bowins alternates.
On Saturday evening Mr. and Mrs. Harold Benson marked their fiftieth anniversary with a family party at their Orono home hosted by their daughter Mrs. Moore and Mr. Moore of Toronto. Attending were many relatives including Mr. and Mrs. Muir, Mr. and Mrs. Helm, Mrs. Maguirn, Greenwood, all of Toronto, and other guests from Orono and Toronto who sent best wishes.
Millbrook 4-H Calf Club led by Mervin Smith set a Durham County record at the Millbrook Fair Grounds achievement day. Donald Winslow topped the scoring with a 949 of 1000 on a Dual Purpose Shorthorn calf. Helen Strong tied for runner up. Charles Reid excelled in pitching and stealing for Orono Pee Wee in a separate game.
Port Hope Intermediates built a seven run third inning to defeat Orono 11 to 5 on Tuesday. George Jones took the loss allowing seven hits in the third before Eric Cagleton finished the frame. Don Mercer Beaton Chuck Armstrong and Eric Careton sparked Orono in the first, while Carleton Crono and Beaton led Port Hope at the plate. Walden earned the win as Brown Kelly led Port Hope hitters.
Insects damaged Scotch Pine plantations last year and Christmas-tree growers were told to check for infection by mid May. European pine sawfly larvae form yellow flags on needles and can strip trees of last year’s needles. Officials advise DDT spraying as a simple control method.
The Free Tuberculin Test Clinic operates in Orono today through Friday June 19 offering a skin test for all ages to detect tuberculosis early. Sponsored by the Northumberland Durham Tuberculosis Association and the Ontario Department of Health, the event runs 2 00 to 5 00 pm and 7 00 to 10 00 pm at Oddfellow's Hall with nurses and doctors reading results on June 22 23 and optional X rays if indicated.
