Liberal Russell C Honey Wins Durham Riding Victory

Russell C Honey of Port Hope, Liberal candidate, upset incumbent Dr. R P Vivian in Durham County with 7 879 votes to 7 670. Other candidates were NDP Helen Coutts 2 211 and Social Credit Kenneth Toms 155. Armed Forces ballot pending. Turnout 82 6 percent with Clarke Township 83 percent and Newcastle 86 percent. Ebenezer Irwin 100 voted, Edith Pennefather 98 voted at Port Hope polling station.

Orono pupils stage mock election matching parents

At Orono Public School grades seven and eight held a mock Federal election with pupil deputized officers and ballots. R C Honey led with 59 votes followed by Dr R P Vivian 20, Mrs Eileen Coutts 16, and Kenneth Toms 8. They also toured Clarke High School guided by Mrs Charter.

Pheasants Raised for Clarke and Darlington Townships

Clarke Township and Darlington Games Commissions raise seven thousand pheasants to be released later. An extra thousand day-old chicks were allocated this year, with 500 mature birds released recently. Funds come from township hunting licenses as feed and care for the birds continue.

Few Trout Found in Wilmot Creek Survey Report

Conservation officer Powell reports a Wilmot upper creek survey showing few trout. North of the railway flume only three brown trout were found and no rainbows, while small rainbows were common elsewhere. Electric stunning counted fish briefly surfacing to be counted, indicating poor fishing due to low fish presence.

Building Committee Plans Erecting Christian Education Building

Crone United Church appoints a Building Committee to plan a Christian Education Building. chairman is Mr R Dickson and secretary Mr R Hancock with members B Long J Rickaby W Irwin C Billings and Mrs W E R Armstrong. committee visits Brooklin Pickering Oshawa Whitby Bobcaygeon and reviews other buildings. Clarke Township Council grants permission to attach the new building to the church. A first meeting with an architect occurred and a second planner is being considered.

Orono United Church Sunday School Graduation and Anniversary

Sunday School students at Orono United Church held an anniversary service with graduation ceremonies. Mr Warburton of Courtice spoke on church work rewards. Marilyn Cobbledick's class sang two selections, the Junior choir also performed, and Joyce Long sang solo parts. Mrs W E Armstrong oversaw the graduation and class promotions. Classes resume in September.

Antique Cars Rally to Visit Orono Park This Sunday

Members of the Antique Car Clubs of the district will hold a rally at Orono Park this Sunday. The first cars are due around early morning hours and will be on display to the public, with many vehicles spanning the 1900s to 1930s in factory condition.

Ontario Municipal Board says the reincorporation hearing for the Village of Oveno will resume Thursday August 30. The session paused since June 6 due to time constraints and will follow prior talks between the Township Council and Police Trustees over the board chairman’s views.

Mrs R Carveth and Miss Bonnie Barlow, daughter of Mr and Mrs H Barlow of Orono, highlighted accompanying riders in the Derby. Bonnie has grown up with the Derby riding a parade pony since age four as an equestrian in the annual event.

Mosport to host Peterborough International stock car race

Eleven top Indianapolis 500 drivers including Roger Ward sign to race at Mosport Park on Saturday June 23 for Canada’s first major late model stock car event. The Peterborough International offers $20,000 in prize money with two 50 lap heats and a 30 lap sports racing event. The Orono Intermediate Baseball Club defeats Ajax 7 4 at Orono Park as Crone limits Ajax to six hits.

A committee from the Orono Couples Club prepares a centennial celebration for the Orono United Church marking its 100th anniversary this month. Plans envision a community event with church members and local residents in attendance.

Orono Colt Derby crowns Sundown Direct amid big turnout

Sundown Direct a Springbrook colt owned by Wm. Prost and driven by Don Heath captured the Orono Chamber of Commerce Colt Derby title with a 2.12 mile, defeating nine rivals as 550 spectators watched the annual event. Goldie Elgin W and Lucy Riddell finished second and third. prize draws added to Derby profits, with a filly colt won by Mrs. Hazel Farrow and 742 tickets sold.
