Park Program To Start This Tuesday

The Orono Amateur Athletic Park Program opens Tuesday morning July 3 with about twenty children registered. Registrations will be taken Tuesday morning. Miss Mary Lynn Bailey will direct the program which runs five mornings a week in July from 9 to noon, including games crafts and art. Bailey is attending leadership training at Camp Quin Monac in preparation for the local program.

Virginia's Boy Grabs Second at Buffalo Meet

Archie Glenney's Virginia's Boy finished second in a Buffalo Raceway harness race on Saturday night, clocking 2 08.2 but short of the win at the wire. Lint, owned by L. Hooey of Orono, also ran but failed to place. Peterborough meet notes follow with Orono horses again competing.

New Colborne Factory to Be Built by United Carr Wastener

The Colborne Chamber of Commerce has agreed with United Carr Wastener Co. of Hamilton to construct a plant in Colborne immediately. Builder Charles Teal will oversee the erection on the south side of No. 2 Highway at the town's east end. United Carr Fastener Co. of Canada Ltd. is a wholly owned subsidiary of United Carr, Boston, with plants in Hamilton Acton St. Remi Que and U.S., U.K., and Australia producing parts for automotive electronics clothing leather goods cosmetics and writing instruments.

Peterborough Race Meet Results Highlight West Stable Placings

Happy Babe owned by K. West and driven by Junior West finished 4th and 2nd with times 2.16.3 and 2.18.2, paying $8.60. Wm. Hooey with Connie's Pride won both heats in 2.16.3 and 2.17.2, paying $25.50 in heat one. Chockoyette Guy and Happy Mac competed in Class A. Chockoyette placed 5th and 6th and Happy Mac finished 7th then 2nd for $14.60. Dandy Worthy has two straight seconds, Goose Alley shows a 4th and 5th. West stable plans to move to Philadelphia next week.

Crowds Small at Mosport Park International Stock Car Race

The first International Peterboro Stock Car Championship drew a modest crowd of about 5,600 at Mosport Park last Saturday. Paul Goldsmith of St. Clair Shores Michigan won the 100 lap race in 2 hours 53.68 minutes driving a 0 62 Catalino Pontiac. Roger Ward Indiana finished 1.2 seconds back, with Curtis Turner Virginia and Don White close behind. Honourable Bryan L Cathcart Ontario Minister opened the Imperial Control Tower and forecast Mosport Park becoming a major tourist attraction.

Setting Of June Flowers For UCW Meeting

The Orono United Church Women held a June meeting in the Sunday School Auditorium with roses and June flowers decor. A Bible study on Romans 8 and a talk on Christian stewardship framed an evening of worship, music, and thanks, ending with strawberry shortcake treats. An outline for the Leadership Training Course at Whitby was read and delegates were named to attend.

Mrs F Jose to Represent Durham in Provincial Princess

Francis Jose of Newcastle will represent Durham County in the Provincial Princess Competition at the Canadian National Exhibition. With only one entry, she is declared county winner and will compete in Ontario’s milking contest and interview at the CNE. The county dairy club meets July 5 at Tamblyn farm with guest speaker William Dunlop on quality milk production.

Service Vote Favours Honey with 270 Vote Lead

Liberal Russell Honey gains 61 votes from the service ballot in Durham boosting his final plurality to 270. Official totals show Coutts 2,217 Honey 7,974 Toms 158 Vivian 7,704 with the contest subject to the recount by Returning Officer Carroll Nichols.

Orono Intermediates Stretch Win Streak In League Battle

Orono Intermediates beat Port Hope 9 3 at Orono Park to stay atop the league standings. Ted Stone pitched seven innings for Orono allowing five hits. Ronnie West and L Wills sparked offense with steals and key hits. Beaton Mercer West and Lane led a third inning five run outburst aided by two Port Hope errors.

Orono Students Hold Two Day School Track Meet

Orono Public School ran a two day track and field event with Reds and Whites facing near equal entries across Primary Junior and Intermediate groups. Students also toured Upper Canada Village with Grade seven and eight visiting Morrisburg to see mills and farm displays before returning for supper.

Four Sack Boat Schooners to Race Around Lake Ontario

Four and possibly five Newfound land schooners or sack boats will race around Lake Ontario this summer. The challenge was issued by George Greenberger of Buffalo, owner of one schooner who will present a challenger prize to the winner. The vessels, once owned by Newfoundland fishermen, are now privately owned pleasure craft, gaff rigged and somewhat smaller than the Nova Scotia boats.

Clarke Township Field Day Highlights Kendal Park Meet

Results from the Clarke Township Field Day held at Kendal Memorial Park on Friday June 8 show multiple age group finals. Winners include Kathy Bridger and Ruth Scott in early female races, Donnie Hills and Raymond Rystra in boys divisions, with many names from Clarke Union, Newcastle, Kendal, and surrounding towns placing across under 8 to under 17 categories.
