Newcastle Wins Shield at Clarke Township Sports Day

Newcastle public school topped Clarke Township annual sports day in Kendal with 54 points, edging Orono 24 and Antioch 18. Billy Hancock led junior boys with wins in softball throw high jump and 50 yard dash, while Francis Cowan and Raymond Moore won senior events.

Mr C J Hughson Celebrates 100th Birthday in Community Event

Brakeman Fatal Fall From Train Near Newcastle

A CNR freight accident near Newcastle on Monday June 16 killed Brakeman Joseph McGrath 58 of Toronto. He slipped between two cars and was run over, his legs severed. He died at the scene within an hour. no inquest will be held. He is survived by two sons Vernon and Donald and two grandsons.

Orone Girl Guides Close 1946-47 Season With Camp Plans

The Orone Girl Guides and Brownies closed their 1946-47 season with a Tuesday evening meeting at the Guide Hall. District Commissioner Mrs. Frank of Bowmanville attended along with Local Association members and guide mothers. Enrollment night saw Brownie kin and two enrollers join. Mrs. Frank presented Guide pins to Mrs. Fred Lycett and Mrs. Ross Gilbart who passed their Tenderfoot Tests.

Five Girls From Orono In Popularity Contest

Five Orono district girls Jean Fee Pauline Robbins Shirley Flintoff Patsy Moffat Ruth Elford compete in a popularity contest linked to the Bowmanville Legion carnival. Tickets are on sale, each vote costs one ticket and entrants may win two radios via the radio draw.

Edward F. Dean of Orono dies after illness at 70

Edward F. Dean of Orono died in Oshawa General Hospital on Friday June 18 after several months of illness in his 71st year. Born March 18 1876 in Manvers Township he married Rowena Gibson and lived in Midland Long Sault and Dean's Corner before retiring to Orono in 1945. Survived by wife two sons Hesper and Harold both of Orono Kenneth of Newcastle and daughter Edna of Orono. Funeral held June 46 at his Orono home with Rev S Littlewood officiating. Interment in Orono Cemetery.

Health Unit Organizes May Child Health Conferences

In May the Health Unit established weekly and monthly Child Health Conferences across Cobourg Bowmanville Campbellford Hastings Bethany Warkworth Blackstock and Port Hope area centers. Nurses weighed babies at homes and offices and discussed feeding and care with mothers while mass x ray surveys and scarlet fever control continued.

Woman's Christian Temperance Union Holds June Meeting

The June meeting of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union was hosted by Mrs. W. Stainton with President Mrs. H. Walsh presiding. After hymn, devotion, and prayer, members answered roll call. A peace report, sympathy cards, Oshawa convention recap, and cigarette harm discussion were shared.

Irregular Attendance By Pupils Causes Discouragement

A large meeting of the Durham County School Trustees and Ratepayers Association was held in Orono on June 16. President Alec Carruthers presided as educators discussed effects of irregular attendance on child health and society, stressing first two years' attendance and proper school lighting and heating.

Mrs. Simon Penfound Dies at 84 in Orono Home

Roy Anne Rundle wife of the late Simon Penfound aged about 85 passed away at her daughter’s home in Orono on June 5. She was a lifelong Darlington resident and Ebenezer Church devotee. Survived by two daughters eight grandchildren and four sons. Funeral held June 9 at Staples home with Rev. H F Yardley officiating. Interment Bowmanville Cemetery.

Decoration Day at Orono Cemetery Observed on June 29

Decoration Day will be held at Orono Cemetery on Sunday June 29 with Fraternal Societies invited to decorate graves. Local ministers will lead devotional exercises and the Orono Band will perform on arrival around 2 30 o'clock. The event aims for the largest decoration service yet. God Save the King.
