Junior Farmers Field Day at Bethany Draws Large Crowd

North Durham defeats South Durham in a hard ball game to close Bethany field day events on Saturday June 13. Salem beat Newcastle in the section A boys final while Bethany tops Fairmount in section B and Bethany claims the girls title 13 to 8. Public school tournament debuts with Janetville beating Bethany 12 to 10. Red Kennedy stars for North Durham with nine strikeouts as a busy crowd enjoys dancing to popular music.

Pleasant Horticultural Meeting.

A Friday evening gathering at Mrs. J. D. Brown’s home drew thirty five members. Roses and peonies were shown. minutes read. treasurer reported a 33.80 balance. Funds were voted to aid the Grafton Flower Show. garden work honored forks on Main street. Entertainment included moving pictures, songs, piano duets, and lunch followed by a Red Cross booth.

Mission Band and Loyal Temperance Legion Meet in Park Street

A combined Mission Band and Loyal Temperance Legion gathering in Park Street S. E. room featured songs readings and a rhythm band program for children and mothers. Mrs W Armstrong told an entertaining story on alcohol harm and Mrs H Walsh spoke on temperance with pledge notes. Juniors won a reciting contest with June Glanville and Douglas White. seniors winners were Jean Turner and Charles Armstrong. The Woman's Christian Temperance Union attendees served lunch.

Dehydration Plant Sought in Durham County

Mr W F Rickard MP asks in the House for facilities to establish a dehydration plant in Northumberland and Durham to process apples along with other fruits and vegetables for UK use. James Gardiner notes government support for dehydrating potatoes beets turnips apples carrots and cabbage with five plants already in Canada.

Orono Scouts and Guides Field Day Highlights

Orono held a Saturday field day featuring a wand drill maypole dance and a Guides marching drill set to Victrola music. Small crowds watched parades on main street as Scouts and Guides uniforms looked smart. Winners included Donna West Dawn Moffatt Carol Staples Ruth Goode Donald Staples Ross Carlton Mont Richardson Murray Patterson. Proceeds totaled 30 dollars with 5 dollars expenses and 25 dollars donated to the Red Cross.

Orono Masonic Lodge held its installation of officers in the lodge room last Thursday evening with Bro. Byron Edmondson presiding. Plan to raise Reserve Army platoon in Orono area

Proposals aim to form a Reserve Army unit from students, those unfit for active service, and older ages in Orono and nearby districts. They would train two evenings weekly for basic army life with pay, to be deployed only in dire national need. Two weeks' summer training poses farm and business conflicts. solution is extended training periods at home bases.

Northumberland Durham budget passed for 1942

The June session opened with approval of a 1942 budget totaling 232 424.84 dollars, set at 6.55 mills, lower than last year’s 6.7. Expenditures cover justice administration charity welfare roads debentures and interest and various grants. A Port Hope high school controversy prompted council to involve the special schools committee and a ratepayer representative. Witness fee delays prompted the council to seek quicker payment methods via the crown attorney.
