Amatuer Show At Fair Seeks School Talent

A Dur ham Central Agriculture Society committee creates a new amateur show for the first day of the 1967 fair. Two divisions choir groups and individuals compete for 100 and 50 dollars. Applications go to Mrs. John Rickard Newcastle Ontario. The school parade and decorated floats receive prizes to boost Friday events.

Trustees Seek Clarke Fifth Line as Development Road

Orono Police Trustees in a special meeting urged Clarke Township to modify a request to the Department of Highways. They want the fifth line of Clarke designated a Development Road from Newtonville Kendal road west to Highway 115 and extended across Somerville Drive to the County road, with the department covering reconstruction and paving costs and jurisdiction thereafter.

Orono Pupils Depart for Ottawa Trip

A Grade eight class from Orono Public School leaves Orono early Wednesday for a stay in Ottawa. The group, funded by student projects, will tour the city’s notable sites. Supervising the trip are teacher and principal Mr. D. Moffat and Mrs. Moffat.

Centenary Celebration At Newtonville United Church

Near six hundred attend the centennial service marking Newtonville United Church’s 100th anniversary on June 4. Rev. T R Wragg spoke, with Rev. R C White assisting. A lunch, cake cutting, and lawn concert by the Orono Junior Band followed as former members wore period attire.

Penny Sale Plans During Centennial Week in Orono

A Penny Sale will be held during Centennial Week at Shopper's Mall on Saturday July 8 with drawings starting at 4:30. Hockey Mothers, chaired by Fran Lunn, voted on motions and officers after an April meeting. Fourteen Teenage Canoes yielded about 165 dollars in profit. proceeds fund hockey activities plus a later teenage dance at Orono Town Hall. Matt Snelders thanked for arranging free cleaning of hockey sweaters by Gillards Cleaners Oshawa.

Mrs E Middleton Appointed Clarke Assistant Librarian

Clarke Public Library Board welcomed Mrs Dorothy Robinson as new librarian and thanked retiring Mrs Bruce Mercer. Mrs Gordon Simpson resigned to pursue a Lindsay nursing course. Mrs Wilda Middleton to start as assistant librarian June 20. May loans totaled 1046, down from 1968. Robinson to report on a paper back books study and attend Belleville conference. A provincial loan service request for light fiction books was made.

Blossoms Draw Crowds On Orono Tour Route

Weekend blossoms delighted travellers on the Orono Chamber of Commerce Blossom Tour. The second annual event included visits to the Orono Tree Nursery Mosport and the Ganaraska Forests with warm weather boosting turnout. About 117 cars joined the Mosport drive while slides at the Nursery attracted packed shows and a full bus for the first tour. Free apples were given by local growers through Durham Growers’ Cold Storage in Newcastle.
