Four Sisters Attend Brida in Orono Wedding

Joyce Elsie Jones and Francis John Cowan wed at Orono United Church on June 8 1961 in a formal ceremony officiated by Rev Basil Long. Attended by four Jones sisters, mint green gowns, yellow shasta mums, and out of town guests from Toronto Willowdale and Burlington marked the celebration amid music by Henry Hayek and Glen Allin.

A testimonial dinner in Bowmanville honored W Ross Strike as he becomes Chairman of the Hydro Electric Commission of Ontario. attendees included Gordon Simpson Ern est. Dent and local officials. a seaside painting was presented as a gift. Strike thanked friends and stressed service to others.

Carnations For The Ladies Orono Bank Joins CIBC

The Orono branch of The Canadian Bank of Commerce merges with the Imperial Bank to form the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. Across Canada 1240 branches now operate under one name. Branch manager Lloyd King says business will continue as before under a new root.

Fire destroys two barns in Clarke Town ship area

Early Wednesday the Town ship of Clarke west and south of Crooked Creek saw two barns burn completely. Owned by Leslie Horvath of Toronto, formerly Wm Reid of Orono, the 90 by 30 and 6 by 35 structures lost hay, a hammer mill, and a manure spreader. Nearby shed machinery survived as fire noted around four AM with no fire equipment on scene.

Crone Branch Opens with Flowers for Customers

The Crone Branch opened on Monday morning displaying posters about the change and was decorated with tulips lilacs and red carnations. During the day a red carnation was given to each lady customer and book matches were presented to the male customers.

George Jones Pitches Orono To Victory

The Orono Intermediate Baseball Club defeated Port Hope 3 to 0 at the local park. George Jones allowed six scattered hits and two walks while Eric Carleton went 2 for 2 and stole a base, sparking Orono with three runs aided by walks and an error. Orono stands in a tight league race with Peterboro Belleville and Newcastle tied at four points each.

Pollard Dies in Car Crash at 71 in Ontario

Albert Arthur Pollard 71 died Wednesday night May 31 in a car accident. Born in Emily Township he lived with his three daughters Kathleen Doreen Lake Gladys and Everett Brown. Funeral June 3 at Lang Memorial Chapel Orono with Rev Basil Long officiating. Pallbearers included six grandsons and six nephews. Pollard a skilled carpenter was known for his cheer and humor.

Work Aplenty For Local Students

Summer work for students in the Village and area is plentiful this year with highway establishments and the new Mosport enterprise hiring. Forty Orono High School boys will work for Mosport handling tickets and parking cars starting this Saturday under Willis Barraball.

Nine Rangers Enrolled At Impressive Ceremony

On Tuesday evening June 6 the first Orono Ranger enrollment was held in the Orono United Church Sunday School Auditorium. Ranger leader Margots Samuel assisted by Miss Marilyn Cobbledick enrolled the girls and presented Sandy Mercer Sheila Vicki Cotter Susy Major Diane Gilbart Carol Wagg Fenna Reinstra Judy Tamblyn and Marjory Tyrrell. Lilian Miller of Bowmanville received the Gold Cord as the highlight of the evening. Special guests included the 1st and 2nd Bowmanville Guide troops. A lunch was served and about fifty friends attended.

Williams Wins Two Heats At Brooklin Harness Race

J Williams drives Canne s Pride to victory in both heats at Brooklin Fair posting times of 2.19 and 2.17 as Dr. R J Taggart s Queen Attorney placed second and third. Orono Couple Celebrate 45th Anniversary

About one hundred fifty relatives and friends gathered in the Odd Fellows Hall Orono to honor Mr. and Mrs. Charles Taylor on their 45th wedding anniversary. Summer Track Meets Promise Busy Season for Students

A group will be on duty all summer weekends and younger boys have agreed to help caterers during track meet days. The arrangement should yield a profitable season for local students as events occur at the track.

Toronto driver Ken Simmons aged 23 suffered severe head injuries when his Austin Healy rolled on the first turn of Mosport Park during the Oakville Trafalgar Light Car Club races. He was reported in poor condition at East General Hospital.

Unofficial Pool Opening at Orono Park

A tiny party of three staged an informal pool opening at Orono Park last Friday. The pool was filling, water not yet reaching the upper shallow area. A brown field mouse watched near the water while a toad offered quiet concern and a frog sat nearby, joking about getting in to do the job properly.
