Ata Park Board decides to open the new swimming pool this Sunday with a lifeguard on duty and set admission charges. The board vows strict action against park damage and speeding and forms a committee to curb vandalism as windows were broken in the bath house. officials note a projected $1800 deficit at opening June 23 due to larger fencing area and added pool items.
The Clarke Township Field Day at Orono Park saw Newcastle win urban school division with 53 points while Newtonville led two room schools with 18 and Clarke Union topped rural schools with 24. Champions span eight to seventeen with multiple regional names listed.

Six teenagers from Bowmanville and Newcastle were admitted to Oshawa General Hospital before noon on Wednesday after a car they rode in struck a tree in Oshawa. John Bentley of Bowmanville was most seriously hurt. others include Scott Rudell Alfred Allred John Cunningham James Stephenson and Paul Barclay. Driver James Stephenson was thrown through the windshield. The group was reportedly en route to buy outboard motor parts. Car damage was about 1000 dollars.

The 1961 Durham Central Agricultural Fair runs September 7 8 and 9 with Tobacco Competitions on Sept 8 featuring a Tobacco Queen and Tieing. Highlights include a $100 Heavy Horse Stake and a $100 Light Horse Stake and a Big 4 Guernsey Show on Sept 9. 4-H exhibits and entertainment by The Kansas Farmer are planned.
Attendance topped eight thousand as the British Empire Motor Club opened its 11th Mosport Park race with 11 events on a 2.4 mile circuit north of Orono. Ludwig Heimrath won the Dunlop Challenge Trophy in a Porsche setting a lap record of 1 49 for an average speed near 80 mph. The next event is June 24 with the Players 200 International drawing a record crowd.
