Local Horses Entered In Chamber Colt Derby

The Orono Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual Colt Derby this Saturday at the Orono Race Track. Fourteen colts from the area compete in the main Derby and four additional races, with drivers owners and local interest high among fans. The Orono Municipal Building hosts a Resuscitator demonstration on Wednesday June 21 organized by the Span Scout Group Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Bruce Mercer invites all interested in operating the life saving equipment to attend. Mr C C Harris of Wilson and Cousin will demonstrate the device. The event starts at 8 30 p m and aims to qualify operators for potential life saving use.

Four Newcastles Boys Injured in Oshawa Crash

Six teenagers from Bowmanville and Newcastle were admitted to Oshawa General Hospital before noon on Wednesday after a car they rode in struck a tree in Oshawa. John Bentley of Bowmanville was most seriously hurt. others include Scott Rudell Alfred Allred John Cunningham James Stephenson and Paul Barclay. Driver James Stephenson was thrown through the windshield. The group was reportedly en route to buy outboard motor parts. Car damage was about 1000 dollars.

Rain shortened activities, but races and prizes followed at the Community Centre with a picnic lunch and free treats.

Millbrook Fair Showcases Horses in 112th Edition Parade

The annual Millbrook Fair drew a large crowd on Wednesday for the 112th edition. A four four-horse team parade led by the Orono Band featured antique cars and public school children, with seven horse teams and a strong riding class among many horse divisions and breeds.

Orono Horticulture Attends Peterborough Meeting

About forty Orono members traveled to Peterborough for the annual Horticultural District Meeting. They gathered at St Pauls Presbyterian Church, toured a Canadian General Electric plant, and enjoyed a 5:30 supper hosted by St Pauls ladies. Mr John Clark of Toronto spoke on his travels in Rome and Italy with photo highlights.

The 1961 Durham Central Agricultural Fair runs September 7 8 and 9 with Tobacco Competitions on Sept 8 featuring a Tobacco Queen and Tieing. Highlights include a $100 Heavy Horse Stake and a $100 Light Horse Stake and a Big 4 Guernsey Show on Sept 9. 4-H exhibits and entertainment by The Kansas Farmer are planned.

Mosport Park Draws 8000 for 11th British Empire Meet

Attendance topped eight thousand as the British Empire Motor Club opened its 11th Mosport Park race with 11 events on a 2.4 mile circuit north of Orono. Ludwig Heimrath won the Dunlop Challenge Trophy in a Porsche setting a lap record of 1 49 for an average speed near 80 mph. The next event is June 24 with the Players 200 International drawing a record crowd.
