The J. B. Carter Trophy goes to 8, S. 14, Hamilton, Bethel Grove for improving rural school grounds. Miss Audrey Linton led efforts with painting, wiring, sanitary upgrades, and grounds work aided by trustees, pupils, and local community.

Driving Schools Teach Safety At The Wheel

Ontario motoring public grows more safety conscious as driving schools expand their role. Instructors stress calmness and adherence to traffic rules to prevent accidents and build quick reflexes for emergencies. Men and women enroll in similar numbers. women often pass tests at higher rate. Enrollment rose after July amendments to the Highway Traffic Act. Schools report 40 pupils daily as common. instruction moves from gears and brakes to real traffic with 10 to 15 lessons to produce a safe driver.

Britain’s 3,000 hp World Record Speed Boat

Sir Malcolm Campbell’s Blue Bird is set for a new world record attempt after structural tests and completion of jet engine trials by De Havilland. The craft previously reached 141.7 mph with a 1,900 hp Rolls-Royce piston engine. the jet setup now delivers 3,000 hp, unprecedented for this small craft.

Committees Formed For Newcastle Lions Carnival

Newcastle Lions Club organizes a Wednesday August 20 carnival at Orono Memorial Park with committees elected for events. Activities include sports events at 2 pm and a Durham County Championship game at 4:80, band parade at 7 pm, band concert at 8 pm, dancing at 9 pm, and a grand draw at 11 pm to benefit under privileged children.

Storms Cause Damage in Durham County District

The weekend storms damaged crops and barns across Durham County. Fields of wheat and oats flattened and hay operations delayed. Barns burned at Clarke Township and Cavan Township. two Clydesdale horses died near Millbrook. Apple orchards suffered heavy hail damage southwest of Grono.

All Star Durham Girls Lose 6 5 at Belleville Picnic

Durham County girls softball from Newtonville Newcastle Courtice and Crono fell 6 to 5 to Hastings County at Belleville after leading 2 0 and tying 3 3. Eleanor Johnson hit a home run and Shirley Flintoff won two events, while Orono football beat Hampton 2 1 and forward Lowery Flintoff starred.

Weather Clears for Haying in Kirby District

Durham Co-Operative Health Service Formed

A meeting of the Durham Federation of Agriculture established the Durham County Co-Operative Health Service. Directors named include Stanley Meade as Chairman Mrs Lawrence White Murs Roy Stewart Claire Allen Earl Weatherill Hartwell Lowery and R G Moffat J J Mellor named Secretary-Treasurer. The charter papers are ready and many applicants are expected to sign up. The service will offer prepaid medical care on cooperative principles for members of Farm Forum Women’s Institute Church professionals and business or fraternal groups in Durham County.

Clarke Township by Law Reminders For Builders And Births

Information for Clarke residents outlines building and repair permits for projects costing $260 or more with fees paid to the Township or Police Trustees. Birth registrations must go to the issuing municipality clerk, not the local clerk. Tourist camps require licensing from the Township Clerk at $5 for the first year and $2.50 annually thereafter, with provincial measurements required.

Two Children Baptized At Park Street Church Sunday

Inclement weather did not deter a sizable Park Street Church congregation for morning baptism services. Rev. A E Eustace led the Sacrament with Rev. H C Wolfraim of Almonte assisting. Glenys Bernice Keane and Douglas Arthur Walker were baptized. Bowermanville’s Arthur Bell sang a vocal solo. Evening service at Newcastle Beach was postponed due to weather.

Goodwill Evening Auxiliary Meeting Recap

The July meeting of the Evening Auxiliary at Park Street Church was led by Mrs Hall's group with social hour by Mrs Reid's group. Speaker Mrs Hustace spoke about life as a minister's wife in a Northern mining town. August meeting was omitted. next gathering is the third Thursday in September.

Mild Poliomyelitis Case Reported In Seymour Township

A single mild poliomyelitis case was reported on a Seymour Township farm. The child was admitted July 6 to Riverdale Isolations Hospital with no paralysis signs. Public health guidance urged hygiene measures and crowd avoidance to prevent spread.
