Newcastle Lions Club schedules a two part Sports Day on August 20 at Lions Field with nearly sixty events for children ages under 16. A major feature is two All-Star midget baseball teams, Newcastle and Orono, competing for the Silver Trophy.
Farmers and their wage earning workers including wives and children may now be covered under the Workmen's Compensation Act. The act extends protection to farm laborers against injury and loss, compensating for time off work and medical care, and easing family financial hardship from accidents.
Prof G N Ruhnke of the Ontario Agricultural College warns winter killing in wheat stems from food reserves in roots. He emphasizes phosphate fertilizer as crucial for fall mineral storage and early spring growth, noting phosphorus must be present in the soil during initial growth to be utilized.
Ontario officials urge potato growers to spray or dust crops regularly to fight late blight. Wet warm conditions favor fungus spread. apply 40 to 50 gallons per acre early, rising to 80 100 gallons as plants grow, using high pressure machines and copper dusts or approved compounds.
The August Wo mans Missionary Society meeting was set as a church program and lawn picnic. Mrs Delve led a hymn and theme Nations get together. Rev A H Eustace spoke on home missionary work and helping New Canadians.

A fatal crash near Bowmanville Saturday left one dead and four injured when a car carrying four Bowmanville residents struck the side of a CME train at a Highway 28 crossing near Frraserville. William C. Crossey, 47, died. companions Ticker Bell Bill Thetford Alvin Allison suffered serious injuries. Russell Wrey escaped unharmed. Crossey is survived by his wife and three sons Donald Glenn and Billy.
In early mining gold came from placers while today lode mining dominates. A vast ancient South African deposit, buried under sediments, yields gold from conglomerate beds at depths over 8,000 feet. The field has produced about 11 billion dollars. A good exhibit of this unusual ore is at the Royal Ontario Museum.
The Durham Central Agricultural Society announces prize lists printed and ready with J. A. Gamey as secretary. The Durham Central Fair is set for September 5 and 6 with horses, cattle, sheep, swine, poultry, grain and fruit classes. New specials include a four wheel vehicle hitch around the track. the fair compares favorably with regional events.
Growers advised to watch for a grub that bores into new raspberry canes near the top. After two brown circular rings are cut, the grub overwinters and may tunnel to the root next spring, wilting tops. Remove affected tops by cutting below the rings and burn.
Bright weather drew a large crowd to Newcastle for the Intermediates Hardball Club event on Monday August 4. Readable games included Newcastle vs Newtonville Orono girls softball 9 6. Bowmanville Intermediates beat Newcastle 3 2. Orono edged Kendal 13 6.
