Orono Kendal Institute Meeting Plans War Work Sale

The Orono Women's Institute met last Friday with about twenty members. They planned a Saturday August 8 sale of homemade cooking using wartime recipes and Vita-min B flour from J. J. Cornish's. They discussed war work quilts and blocks for future blankets, collected woollens for blankets, and reported jam production for overseas shipments.

Recruiting Drive For Veterans Guard In Canada

Kingston July 28 An intensive three week recruiting drive to boost the Veterans Guard of Canada proceeds in Military District No 3 with national scope across all districts. Lieut Col W H D MacMahon says volunteers from districts meet to align campaigns. He notes the VGC roles in World War II echoing their WWI service and urges former comrades to join.

Jury rules Miller death natural in Peterboro coroner inquest

A coroner's jury in Peterboro concluded Burton C. Miller died of natural causes after a three week illness. The inquest followed a car collision last September 28 involving Chief Draper of Toronto, who was later fined 300 dollars for dangerous driving. The verdict cites subdural hemorrhage as the death cause with medical testimony supporting natural deterioration.

Oshawa Receives New Band Shell From Col McLaughlin

More than 4,000 people gathered at Memorial Park Oshawa Friday night as Col I S McLaughlin presented the city with a new band shell built through his generosity. Mayor Gifford accepted amid applause after a ceremony featuring the Civic and Regimental bands and boy choristers. Memorial plaques were unveiled and a ceremonial flag display accompanied a high school musical program.

Toothpaste Tubes Gathered for Government Salvage

Battered toothpaste tubes are marked Important by the Salvage officer. Turn in collapsible tubes at any drug store for government salvage. Chas Tyrrell, local druggist, collects used casings on his counter. Tin from the tubes will plate water canteen lids needed by the armed forces. It is unlawful to discard collapsible tubes.

May Rose Baldwin and Ronald Pingle wed at Park Street Church parsonage Orono on July 18. Rev S Littlewood officiated. Bride wore heaven blue silk jersey with pink rose corsage. Wilford Froste Returns After Atlantic Voyage Shipwreck

Wilford Froste son of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Froste of Orono arrived in New York after a six teen day voyage from Ireland marked by fog and a shipwreck near Ireland on the return trip from Halifax to England Froste was later seen in Port Hope and is expected home.

Wedding Guests Attend Ceremony And Cake Cutting

Prose crepe gown and white hat adorned with a corsage of roses marked the bridesmaid attire with Mrs Pingle assisting. Refreshments on the lawn preceded the cake cutting in a decorated room. Mrs K Gamsby and Mrs S Hall of Orono served guests as the couple departed for eastern Ontario points in a dark blue crepe dress.

Toronto Bride Weds in Quiet Greenbank Church Ceremony

Dorothy Selena Scott, of Bowmanville, and J Aylward D Little, of Toronto, united in marriage at Greenbank United Church parsonage with Rev Thomas Wallace officiating. The bride wore a suede lace pink frock and a blue crepe traveling dress. They left for a Muskoka honeymoon and will reside in Toronto after.

Miss Farmerette of 1942 crowned in St. Catharines

Miss Patreia Abbott of Forest Hill Village, 18, was named Miss Farmerette of 1942 at St. Catharines after seventeen contestants. The event honored Farm Service Force girls aiding wartime harvests with a fruit crown and gift to Hon. P. M. Dewan.

Alec McDonald Arrives in Britain for CBC Overseas Unit Work

Alexander John McDonald known as Alec arrives safely in Britain to join CBC Overseas Unit. He is a Queen's University graduate of 1936 who worked at the University radio station for two years before joining CBC. He oversaw recorded features during the 1939 Royal Visit and later supervised CBC Toronto Studios programmes until going overseas.
