Canada faces a wool shortage as Ontario and national officials push a campaign to boost sheep numbers by 25 percent. The Ontario effort, led by W. P. Watson, targets 1,000 new flocks and 110,000 ewe lambs to raise province output for 1943.
A young doe was spotted on William Rutherford’s Kirby farm by Donald Brown and Sid Rutherford while hoeing turnips. After crossing fences, it moved toward a pasture with grazing cows, raising questions about its origin and possible southward migration from Haliburton district.
Clarke Township council met in Orono with full attendance. By law 1077 the police village rate remains 7 mills. by law 1078 township rates set at county 11.5 mills township 4 mills general school 6.9 mills. Resolutions on road allowance, tax collector Awde, and a $200 grant to the Durham Central Agricultural Society were approved. Numerous invoice payments to local residents and firms were authorized.
A weekly review for July 23 to 30 1942 notes Senate readings on overseas conscription powers with a 42 9 vote along with a Commons defeat on a Duff report reorganization. It reports para troops authorized, four Canadian squadrons in Hamburg and Duisburg raids, metals shortages prompting civilian curtailment, tungsten molybdenum and vanadium conservation, benzol restrictions, new Wartime Prices and Trade Board credit limits, beef price cuts effective August 3, and Joint War Production Committee results showing U S munitions output nearly quadruple 1941 while Canadian output triples.
The Orono Branch held its August meeting in Orange Hall with progress on British Civilian sewing and small boys outfits. Comfort bags for sailors will be sent before Christmas. the work room will close for August though quiltings may continue elsewhere.
Ontario will delay start of secondary schools by two weeks this fall to free twenty thousand students to assist farmers. Premier Michell Hepburn says farm labour is in short supply and crop losses must be avoided. If required, schools may stay closed an extra month. Agriculture officials seek ten thousand more helpers.
Clarke Union neighbors hosted visitors from Oshawa Toronto Pickering Kingston and more. Aylward Little received an electric floor lamp from Clarke Union friends as Ernest Hawke led the gathering with remarks and a read address.
Weather blessed Newcastle sports day with five games on Monday. Port Hope beat Newcastle 8 to 7 in hard ball, while Port Hope also benefited from late errors to claim the 8 to 7 win. Newcastle girls defeated Orono 12 to 10 as the day concluded with Brunt pitching for Newcastle and strong hitting from Port Hope and Orono batters.
August WMS session in Orono Park presided by Mrs M H Staples in absence of president Mrs Littlewood. Theme The Bible and temperance program led by W C T U members included talks on liquor, abstinence, and a delegate to a Whitby College leaders school.
Ottawa reports a major rise in the official cost of living index since price controls began, with a 60 cent weekly bonus for most workers effective August 15 and a 2.4 percent raise for certain women and young men under thresholds. The change will add about 52 million dollars annually to payrolls, driven largely by food price increases with beef and potatoes making up most of the rise.
