Trustees Set August Water Meeting For Orono Village

Trustees finalized sidewalk work and village projects at the August meeting. A public water supply discussion with the Ontario Water Resources Commission is set for August 8, inviting all Orono ratepayers to attend.

Drama Festival Contest For Coveted Trophy And Prizes

Nine entries compete for a sculptured trophy donated by the Orono Chamber of Commerce and prizes from the Durham Central Agricultural Society. Last year Knox Theatre Group won for Rise and Shine. Awards include best play 40 dollars, runner up 30, others 10, plus acting and directing honors backed by local fraternal orders and Harlander pottery plaques.

Fire Destroys Load of Hay Near Hamiltons Corners

Early Friday a hay load beside the Leskard road north of Hamiltons Corners was set ablaze. A rubber-tired wagon owned by Lawrence Hooey of Orono burned with the hay, both a total loss. Mailboxes were damaged nearby as police and Orono Fire Chief investigated around five in the morning.

Church Service At Orono Park

About one hundred attend outdoor service at Orono Park with Rev. M. C. Fisher as guest speaker. Rev. Basil Long leads service and reads scriptures while the Orono Band provides hymns and musical selections.

Orono Cubs Enjoy Week-end Camp at Emily Park

Twenty three Orono Cub Pack members plus six leaders spent a weekend at Emily Park on the Pidgeon River. They pitched four bell tents, swam, played games, and learned outdoor cooking and Cub skills. A Sunday service was led by Miss Ann Best before returning home.

Hail Storm Strikes Orono Area Briefly

A freak hail storm hit Orono Friday afternoon, pelting the village for a few minutes. Thunder and lightning were seen, a power line to Curo ply and Glanville's Feed Mill went out briefly, and two men at the mill, Bob Glanville and Emil Schmid, received shocks.

Durham County Sheep Club held Achievement Day at Orono Fair Grounds with full attendance. Grant Glaspell and David Brent won top market lambs and leading showmen honors, aiming for the grand champion 4-H livestock showman title in Durham County.

Eustace Named to London Em press United Church Post

Rev. Andrew E. Eustace of North Street United Church Goderich will take ministerial duties at Em press United Church London on October 1. He succeeds Rev. A D Boa who moved to Port Stanley. The official board accepted the pastoral relations committee recommendation. Eustace and his wife have four children Barbara Leslie Richard and Judy. He has lived in Goderich Pem broke and Orono. Born in Alberta he studied in Alberta and Winnipeg and earned a B D from Edmonton Emanuel College Toronto. He is serving a third term as chairman of Huron Presbytery and will attend the General Council in Edmonton this year.

Clarke Township High School Plans Move Forward

Durham County district high school board at Port Hope approved a $700 000 debenture for a new 500 pupil school at Courtice with site chosen and a August by law push. Also approved additions to Port Hope high and Clarke township site planning and architect engagement for the project.

Bryson Picnic Draws Families From Nearby Towns

The annual Bryson Picnic was held Saturday July 16 in Orono Park with ninety attendees. Children competed in games and races and prizes were awarded. a picnic lunch was enjoyed by all. Family members traveled from Toronto Burlington Belleville Millbrook Peterborough and the Orono area.

To Choose Tobacco King And Queen At Fall Fair

The Orono Fair introduces tobacco exhibits and contests organized by the Northumberland Durham Tobacco Growers and the Durham Central Agricultural Society. It includes King and Queen contests with prizes from 2 to 25 dollars, a tobacco-tieing championship, and entries due by August 31 to Dane Found in Orono.
