Teacher Leader Training Course Planned at Orono Church

The Christian Education Committee of Orono United Church will run a ten session Teacher and Leader Training Course from September 12 to 30 for Sunday School teachers and others. Sessions start at 8 p.m. and certificates will be awarded on Rally Day October 2.

Oswald Cowan Rites Held For Local Farmer Of Orono

Oswald Cowan longtime Clarke Township resident and Orono farmer died at home July 1 1960 after retiring in 1944. Survived by wife Hazel Cooper son Brooks and five grandchildren, sister Mrs W W Cowan of Oshawa. Funeral July 4 from Church Street residence with Rev Basil Long officiating. Interment in Orono Cemetery.

Maskinonge Raised First At Omemee

The first known instance of artificial propagation of maskinonge in Ontario occurred at Omemee in 1927. G D Budie of the Ontario department reports trap nets in the Pigeon River captured many adult maskinonge and stripped their eggs during springs 1927 1928 and 1929.

The Orono Red Cross presented year end swim awards after a heart of racing events on Friday July 29. Orono Chamber Erects Village Sign Along Highway

The Orono Chamber of Commerce set up a new village sign on the east side of Highway 115 on Mr A Blewett’s property. It bears the village name with the motto A Good Place to Live and notes the village date and the Street Fair August 18th as the next attraction.

Orono Scouts Attend Fifth Aubrey Island Camp

Five Orono Scouts join Bowmanville Scouts at Aubrey Island in the St Lawrence River for the fifth annual camp. Leaders Leslie Aslett and Fae Adams supervise. Attending Orono boys are Arnold Wallace Gamey Lycett Dane Rogerson Craig Rogerson and Bob Barraball.

Orono Players Prepare For Drama Festival

Hatchery Effort Released Maskinonge Into Kawartha Waters

From 1930 to 1934 a jar type hatchery on the Pigeon River near Omemee hatched about one and a half to two million maskinonge eggs annually. Arnold McQuade oversaw the operation with helpers Harry Cheesman Bud Oakes Henry Jackson and John Barram. Stock was released into Pigeon Lake and nearby Kawartha waters before moving to the Deer Lake Hatchery on the Crowe River northeast of Havelock.

Couvier Kemp Nuptials in Albert Street United Church

Betty Marie Kemp daughter of Mr and Mrs Hayden D Kemp of Oshawa wed Ronald Nelson Couvier of Orono at Albert Street United Church. The ceremony was conducted by Rev S C H Atkinson with music by Mrs Joseph Wiltshire. The couple plans to reside in Oshawa after a westward honeymoon.

Garden Hill opens new conservation park with soil judging event

Garden Hill Conservation Area opens on Kirby Campbellcroft road led by Minister W M Nickle with lunch and official ceremonies. A Durham soil judging contest at Elmore Scott farm drew 50 entrants. Ronald Welsh won top age 17plus with 84 points and $25 prize, with multiple class winners across junior and senior groups.

Health Report for Northumberland Durham Unit June 1960

June health report shows 60 communicable cases with 23 mumps and 15 chickenpox. TB remains 325 on record with one new case. three discharged from sanatorium. Immunization clinics were held at 54 schools with 600 completing doses. 728 home visits by public health nurses, 86 nursing care visits mainly in Millbrook.

Crooked Creek Farmer Crushed By Tractor

Samuel Galitsky a 75 year old farmer from Newtonville was killed when his tractor plunged nine feet into a Crooked Creek barn while loading hay. Anthony Cichanowski 66 Toronto man was atop the hay and not injured. Coroner Dr. McArthur ruled death from a fractured neck.
