Pool Approved By Health Dept Board Seek $2000 Then To Begin Work

Orono Park Board approves pool contract with Partner Plumbing and Heating and plans to start once $6500 in funds is raised. A $2000 fundraising drive from local organizations and residents is needed, with donations accepted via village receipt books. Health units approve construction under Public Health Act. Chamber of Commerce withdraws support, prompting a board meeting. Church Street work begins, with street digging and refilling planned.

Orono Fire Department Responds To Post Office Area Fire

Saturday morning around 9 30 the Orono Fire Department was called after smoke appeared from the rear apartment of the Post Office occupied by Mr and Mrs Wm Madill. Firemen entered through a window found an electric stove left on with melted lard near the burner causing smoke. no damage beyond burned paper.

Centenarian Sarah Jane Gibson Stewart Remembered in Sidney

Born near Leskard Canada Sarah Jane Gibson Stewart celebrated her 100th birthday in Sidney greeting friends reading messages from President Eisenhower and Governor Aronson. She and her husband David Stewart Sr. once owned part of Sidney and ran a general store before moving to a farm near Richland County.

Authority Ready To Open New Garden Hill Park

The Ganaraska River Conservation Authority plans the official opening of a new park at Camden Hill with a tour of the Ganaraska forest. Hon W M Nickle will perform the opening as committees report plans are on track while North Hope Association will serve lunches. A contemplated pond conversion at Kendal is deemed too costly and oil seepage concerns from Dale Corners refineries will be investigated. Next meeting is set for August 2 at the Garden Hill conservation area park.

The Orono Park Board plans a Monday night meeting to clear up misunderstanding and discuss the pool project for Orono Community Park. The Chamber of Commerce will also clarify the matter.

Tower Hill History Revealed In Sylva

In Sylva, Ontario the 85 foot wooden Tower Hill tower in Clarke Township marked a Durham County landmark. Decayed in 1918 the site holds a cement and bronze bench mark by the Canadian Geodetic Survey. Plans call for an 89 foot steel tower two miles east with higher elevation and fewer blind spots attracting visitors.

Completing Fish Planting In Lindsay Forest District 1960

The Lindsay Forest District nears completion of its 1960 fish planting program. Acting Manager John Unt of Deer Lake Maskinonge Hatchery notes several thousand fingerlings will be planted in suitable waters, ending the year’s fish raising. Earlier, speckled, lake, rainbow, and brown trout yearlings were distributed to numerous district waters. A Maple Ontario netting crew assists a Shadow or Mud Turtle Lake survey in Somerville Township, expected to take a month or more. Fishery Technician R M Simson schedules lake surveys to gather depths, temperatures, and species data for better scientific water management.

Miller Site excavation in Pickering moves into second season

Royal Ontario Museum archaeologists led by Walter Kenyon reopen the Miller Site in Pickering township to uncover more of the 1000 year old village. They expect burial finds and artifacts, hoping the site links to Troquois ancestors. Over 18,000 visitors viewed progress last year as digs continue.

Orono Trustees Plan Sidewalk Base and Garbage Billing

The Orono Police Trustees approved a sidewalk base project along Counties Road north of Cob Hill with two tenders opened. They also set August 1 1960 to enforce a new garbage collection by law charging 50 cents monthly per household collected bi monthly through Hydro and tax bills. An open meeting in August will present municipal water proceedings with Ontario Water Resources Commission invited.
