Bigelow Couple Bring Landmark 50th Anniversary to Kirby

Mr and Mrs A J Bigelow celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at Manor Pride Farms in Kirby near Orono with about 300 guests. The event featured a white and gold decor, a three tier cake, tea service by Kirby United Church women, and gifts including an electric label lamp and an electric clock from family and cousins. The couple, long rooted in Clarke Township, are noted for their hard work and health, with their sons Philip and Wilfrid serving in the Army during World War II and holding positions in Port Hope and Oakville.

Orono and Hampton W I held a joint picnic at Hampton Park after a Town Hall gathering. Mrs. O W Rolph presided, health talk by Mrs H Barlow, quiz led by Mrs R A Forrester, winner Mrs I Winter, birthday cake by Mrs Chas Wood, thanks to Hampton hosts.

Shower Given For Mr. And Mrs. Clifford Macklin

Mr and Mrs Clifford Macklin formerly Betty Walker were guests of honour at a miscellaneous shower on July 19 in the Orange Hall Orono. Organized by Mrs Arthur Blewett Mrs Ben White and Mrs Ephraim White the hall was decorated with hydrangea and delphiniums. Bonnie Graham presented Mrs Macklin with a corsage as guests admired a three layer gift cake. Donald Graham played the wedding march before a social hour and lunch as friends from Peterborough Toronto Bowmanville and Pontypool attended.

Kenneth Gamsby Rites Held In Orono Community

Kenneth Gamsby 46 died July 25 1950 at Oshawa General Hospital after a two year illness. He lived in Orono with his wife Gladys Moore and children Kay Grace James and Douglas. Survived by father Leonard Gamsby sister Mrs Laing and others. Funeral and graveside rites were under Masonic auspices with services at his Main Street South residence and Orono Cemetery.

Trull Family Picnic At Orono Park

The Trull picnic took place at Orono Park on Saturday July 15 with about fifty attendees from Orono Hampton Oshawa Whitby Bowmanville Countrce and Kingston. Attendees enjoyed pies tarts ice cream and watermelon. President Earl Trull Courtice led the meeting with Secretary Treasurer Mrs. Boyd Ayre Hampton RR 1 present along with the nominating slate.

Ontario Potato Growers Enter 500 Bushel Per Acre Contest

More than 300 Ontario farmers enter the 500 Bushel Per Acre or High Yield Potato Clubs. Participants come from Algoma to York with entries judged on yield, quality, and marketable tubers. Final awards at the Royal Winter Fair include a $250 first prize and ten prizes overall.

Orono Band Performs At Port Hope Band Shell

The Orono Band of thirty under M. J. Tamblyn played to a large Port Hope audience on Sunday July 23 at 8 30 PM in the Park. New uniforms impressed as they presented Scenes from Operaland Gala Night and Bondman with strong applause.

Mass Tuberculosis Survey Reports 18306 X rays in United Counties

The Division of Tuberculosis Prevention completed mass chest x rays across 21 localities in the United Counties during March April and June. Of 18306 examined 22 new TB cases were found six active and hospitalized while 16 were inactive needing follow up x rays in months. A year long survey covered the whole area funded by Christmas seal sales with monthly clinics in five centers for cases contacts and physician referrals. Prizes awarded at the event recognized diverse participants and the 1951 picnic will be at Hampton Park with date to be announced.

Orono Police Trustees Seek Construction of Millson Bridge

The Orono Police Trustees met on Monday July 24 and discussed building the Millson bridge this year. They heard proposals for a Main Street water tank near Harry Millson's property and considered using the stream in the interim. They planned a volunteer fire brigade by law and set a July 31 meeting with firemen, and asked the municipal engineer to seek a departmental subsidy for the bridge. They also debated traffic changes making Park and Centre streets through streets instead of Church Street.

Orono Police Trustees Move on Speeding Motorcycles

The Orono Police Trustees acted on complaints about motorcycle speeding within the village limits. Trustees praised the garbage collection operation and the village’s cooperation with the new convenience before adjourning the meeting.
