Orono Volunteer Fire Brigade Reorganizes With New Officers
The Orono Police Trustees and the Orono Fire Brigade met to establish a by-law creating a volunteer force. Eight members attended as the brigade was organized and approved for a 25 percent provincial fire grant, typically about 125 dollars yearly. Fire Chief Wm. Davey announced his resignation after forty seven years of service. Officers were elected and twelve firemen authorized, with a proposal to purchase two oxygen masks and a grant of fifteen dollars per fire plus twenty five dollars annually to the trustees.

Best Menu Contest At Canadian National Exhibition

Canadian Holstein Is First With Two 1200 Lb Records
Albert Seiling of Elmira Ontario reports Seiling Royal Wing a nine year old Holstein that in 365 days of three times daily milking yielded 28 714 pounds of milk with 1215 pounds fat at 4 23 percent butterfat marking two official 1200 pound fat records both over 1200 pounds on a three daily milking. The cow also produced 28 505 pounds milk 1219 pounds fat at 4 28 percent in a prior 365 day triple milking period. These are among Canada's top fat records and Royal Wing is said to remain in good shape for another record when she freshens.

May Open Shorthorn Unit If Breeders Co-operate

Hancock Family Reunion Draws Wide Attendance
The Hancock clan held its annual gathering at Nichols Oval Peterborough on Wednesday July 19 with about eighty members traveling from Ottawa Belleville Warkworth Orono Bowmanville Newcastle Newtonville Port Hope and Vancouver Rev Willis T Hancock oldest at 85 led the visitors. A program of races contests prizes and a plentiful supper followed by officer elections Morley Hancock Port Hope became President with C Allin Newcastle as Secretary Treasurer and Mrs Victor Hancock Newcastle and Mrs W Tepple Bowmanville on the sports committee. Teens enjoyed baseball while youngsters enjoyed slides and games. The 1951 picnic is set for Cobourg Park with date to be announced.

Millson Bridge Plans Submitted for Approval in Clarke Township
Clarke Township Council met August 1 with Deputy Reeve Lowery chairing. They discussed mill road and dam reconstruction, pending solicitor agreements for the Co‑op and Township, and a possible hydro use not deemed authentic. The Railway Company would pay 640 for the railway crossing, far below the Board of Transport’s 1500. Council planned a site visit to Kendal to clarify calcium chloride charges and revenue effects. A 2000 acre land project west of Newcastle for university research raised tax questions, and park and centre streets were reclassified to through streets.

Hailstorm Wrecks Crops Across Garnet Rickard Area
A Friday afternoon five minute hail storm from Garnet Rickard to Lake Ontario devastated farms. Mangels on Garnet Rickard’s, tomatoes on James T. Brown’s, and grain on Charlie Gilkes’s were ruined with straw left standing in places. Apples suffered heavy losses especially at Lawrence Cobbledick’s, with hailstones as large as quarters. Other affected farmers included George Allin A Parker and George Walton.
