Orono Union marks its sixty fifth anniversary with a July 18 program at the Open Door of Kendal United Church area. Miss Shenwin and Mrs. Lycett lead devotionals. Rev Lancaster delivers the sermon. a lunch follows as members meet three Newtonville Charge churches. A reading includes Elva Tucker’s poem about sisterhood and the white ribbon bow symbol.

Durham Junior Farmers Annual Meet Draws Active Attendance

The Durham County Junior Farmers held its annual meeting on Friday July 7 at 8 30 pm with strong attendance. Guest speaker Don Milburn of Peterboro urged duties and responsibilities of the organization. An executive board was elected including President Murray Lord Campbellcroft and various officers from multiple townships.

Pilot Unhurt In Forced Landing Near Pontypool

Fit Lieut D Cooke of Montreal rode out engine trouble in an RCAF Harvard Trainer during a flight from Camp Borden to Montreal. He made a belly landing on a field two miles north of Pontypool while unhurt. Minor damage and the craft was hauled to Trenton later that night.

Junior Farmers Executive Meet At Orono Park

The Junior Farmers Executive met at Orono Park on Sunday July 16 at 2 30 to plan the Annual Junior Farmers Church Service and discuss the Region Sports Day at Belleville on July 27. August 20 is set for the Church Service at the Federation Camp Site. Committees were formed and members are asked to keep the date in mind. Plans include chartering buses to travel to Belleville and interested riders should contact the Department of Agriculture office immediately.

Enniskillen Boy Shot By Another Youth Is Recovering

Six year old David Benham of Enniskillen is recovering at Oshawa General Hospital after being struck in the chest by a .22 caliber rifle discharged accidentally by another hunter while David fished near a creek. An emergency operation by Dr. H. Hall saved his life as police ruled it an accidental shooting.

Induction Service at Shiloh Church Draws Congregations

A close win by the ball team against Courtice accompanied Friday evening’s induction service at Shiloh Church. Newtonville Kendal and Shiloh attendees heard ministers give messages including a key line about shared ministry seven days a week. A lunch and reception followed, with the W M S meeting July with Mrs. George Stapleton presiding in the basement.

Twilight Meet Of Holstein Breeders Interest The events at Orono grounds

The Black burn Hardy family picnic at Orono Agricultural grounds drew over 100 attendees on July 1. Events included softball led by Vera Allin and Ella Down, horseshoes won by Ken Brown and G Nickerson, races for various age groups, a peanut scramble, and a business meeting led by Clarence Allin. Awards honored oldest, youngest, and farthest traveler. The Durham County Holstein Breeders held a separate twilight meeting at Blackstock with M C McPhail demonstrating judging and typing, followed by a herd judging contest and prize distribution.

Orono Girls Edge Newtonville In Semi Final Opener

Orono defeated Newtonville 7 to 5 in the semi final opener at Newtonville on Wednesday. Joan Cooper started for Orono with Enid Tennant relieving in the sixth inning. A return game is set for Friday at Orono Park.

Skunk Attacks Hen House Kills Pullets

Friday night a skunk killed 26 pullets in R. H. Hollingsworths hen house. He repaired the entrance and, armed with a flashlight and pitchfork, battled the skunk on Saturday evening. The animal released gas as it retreated, and a second raid killed four more pullets.

Frederick Charles Riddell Dies in Peterborough at 70

Frederick Charles Riddell aged 70 died in Peterborough on Friday June 30. Born in Clarke Township he was a former carpenter who retired in 1949. Survived by wife Ethel May Caldwell of Toronto, son George, daughter Mrs P Luther, brother William of Orono. Funeral held July 8 at Orono Cemetery with Rev H G Douglas officiating.
