Clarke Township Council Plans Delayed 1958 Tax ByLaw Action

The Clarke township council met July 7 with Reeve Lowery presiding. It approved a $10 grant to the Durham County Plowman's Association and declared Civic Holiday as a township holiday. Bylaw 1229 to raise 1958 rates was postponed for July discussions amid assessment arbitration.

Two Die in Highway 2 Car Crash Near Welcome

A car overturned and burned on Highway 2 one mile from Welcome killing Floyd Danny Butler 23 of Oshawa and Allen Dumett of Bowmanville. Police traced plates to O Dell family. Alan Dumett funeral held in Orono Cemetery with services at Morris Funeral Chapel.

Wide network included Port Hope Hamilton Toronto Kenora Scarboro and Leskard with numerous families attending suppers and weekend stays. July 12th Celebration At Cobourg Loyal Orange Order Parade

Ideal weather brought about 10 000 visitors to Cobourg for the Battle of the Boyne anniversary parade. Lodges from Victoria Haliburton Peterborough Ontario Northumberland and Durham counties marched past the judges stand in a hour and a half procession. Prizes went to Queen Mary Lodge Oshawa best band Tyrone Lodge and Tyrone Juvenile Lodge. Social activities followed with notices of meetings devotions supper plans and a blessing of peace.

Orono Turf Club Sets Classic Meet in Onronto August 15

The Orono Turf Club in Queen Village Ontario plans a Saturday August 15 classic harness race. Past meets drew large crowds with about nine hundred to one thousand spectators, and officials expect a bigger turnout as Thorncliffe Toronto closes August 12 leaving many horses available from Prince Edward Island to Manitoba for the Orono feature.

School Board Accepts Tender For Re-wiring School

The Overs Public School Trustees opened bids for rewiring the school and accepted Crono Electric of Crono Ontario for 8561 dollars. Higgon Eiedric Bowmungville bid 3860 dollars. four sevenths of the cost supported by the Durham County District High School Board and Ontario Department of Education grant, with local taxpayers possibly paying 915.60 dollars. The board approved up to 40 for picture slides to be taken by Miss K Foster for Hawaii trip and owned by the school, plus 210 for first floor sanding and stairs. A special meeting will discuss legislative grants for 1953 54 student registration.

The will probated in Cobourg leaves Minnie Halil's estate mainly to Orono entities and local groups. Specific bequests include 300 to Orono Library, 500 to Orono Park, 500 to the United Church board, 500 to the W M of the United Church, 500 to the Salvation Army, 500 to U N S for the Blind, 500 to Bowmanville Hospital, and 500 to the Children's Aid Society. The residue goes to the Orono Church, Orono Park, and Bowmanville Hospital in equal shares.
