Orono July 1 Fest Combined Track Racing And Ball

Orono hosts a two day celebration with Graydon Shelton’s band in Township Hall and a large harness racing meet at the half mile track. Nineteen horses raced with Norval G. and Royal Beulah winning heats while near nine hundred fans attended. Rain cut short the ball game between Orono and Port Hope after two innings.

Centennial Celebration To Be Observed By Orono Fair

Orono Fall Fair marks a century of Clarke Township agriculture with history notes from 1853 grants and a new 1953 centennial set of awards. Directors plan grandstand improvements, discuss use of a $1000 centennial grant, and invite area residents to attend September 12th.

Raymond Francis Woodward and Ruby Lola Louisa Collett were married at Kendal United Church with Rev. BD Lancaster officiating. The couple plans to reside in Oshawa after a reception at the bride’s home and a ceremony featuring family members as attendants and musicians.

Mary Rosella Graham Paterson dies after heart illness

Death occurs June 18 1958 in Orono Ontario of Mrs Mary Rosella Paterson wife of John A Paterson after a year long heart condition. Born January 18 1883 in Verulan Township she leaves four sons James Alan Harry Murray Kathleen and one deceased Donald and siblings James H Graham and Mrs H C Mann. Funeral held at Morris Chapel Bowmanville with burial in St Johns Norway Cemetery Toronto.

Hotel Robbery In New York Leads To Theft At Suite

A thief entered an unlocked hotel suite in New York City and stole 200 dollars in cash and jewelry valued at 40000 from Mrs. Raymond Stark wife of the late Fanny Brice. Police said the couple did not lock the door when returning from a night club.

Park Children Recreation Program Timetable Established

Fifty five boys and girls have signed up for the park recreation program with expected growth to sixty five by week’s end. The plan outlines supervised play for ages four to eight with safe supervision and a weekly schedule including volleyball tennis and water games coached by several staff members across Monday to Friday.

Arbitration Board Opens Hearing on High School Appeal

A district arbitration panel met in the Orono council chamber to hear appeals from Hope and Clarke townships regarding the District High School assessment. Waddell of Clarke urged basing levies on actual municipal plus business assessments, while Nichols of Hope suggested adjusting factors by attendance and annual recalculation. Port Hope officials questioned proposed annexation adjustments and debated using current assessment figures.

Former Orone Couple Celebrate Sixtieth Anniversary

Rev. and Mrs. William Benjamin Tucker of 195 Glendonwynne Rd W Toronto celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 28. He served pastorates in Brighton Whitby Madoc Campbellford Norwood Oshawa Wellington Orono Manilla and Coboconk before retiring to Toronto 30 years ago. Their son Dr. Albert William Tucker and three grandchildren live in Princeton New Jersey where Dr. Tucker is mathematics chair at Princeton University.
