Clarke Township Benefits From High School Levy Reduction

Ratepayers in Clarke Township gain relief of about seven thousand dollars under new district High School Area taxation. An Arbitration Board set the equalized and business assessments used to levy pounds for Port Hope Bowmanville Darlington Clarke Hope Newcastle South Cavan and Millbrook. Clarke’s levy drops from twenty thousand to thirteen thousand one hundred dollars, a savings and millage reduction, with potential 1954 adjustments and appeal rights.

Orono Fall Fair Cives Media To Display Talent

Orono Fair organizers outline exhibits and entertainment as key to success for the 1953 Orono Fair. The prize list by Durham Central Agricultural Society invites broad participation in home arts, livestock, gardens, and more, with entry forms and simple tabulation supplied. The Orono Band also performed at a Port Perry political rally this week.

W C T U Meets at Orono United Church July 21

The Women’s Christian Temperance Union held its regular monthly meeting in the Orono United Church Sunday School auditorium. Mrs J Walsh opened with a prayer and hymn, minutes approved, and a motion passed canceling the August meeting. Mrs H Rowe spoke on the World W C T U Convention in Vancouver in June. The gathering closed with hymns and the Mizpah Benediction.

Hancock Family Held Annual Picnic In Peterboro

The Hancock family held its annual Peterboro picnic at Nichols Oval with attendees from Bowmanville Orono Peterborough Perrytown Warkworth Belleville Port Hope Newcastle and nearby areas. 85 members dined after games and contests. new babies arrived and 1954 officers were elected. The 1954 gathering was set for Orono Park on the third Wednesday of July.

May 21st Order Revoked On The Movement Of Hogs

The Department of Agriculture revokes the May 21 1953 order restricting hog movement in Ontario after a ministerial order declares hog cholera under control. Quarantine remains on individual premises and all Community Sales Yards in Ontario with movement into or out of these yards prohibited. Quarantined counties include Essex Kent Lambton Wentworth Brant Elgin Middlesex Norfolk Haldimand Welland Lincoln Oxford Perth Huron Waterloo Halton Peel Welland Dufferin Simcoe York Durham Northumberland Peterborough Muskoka district.

Orono Board Adopts Non-Resident Pupil Policy

Orono Public School Board approves charging non-resident pupils the actual cost of education for 1953-54. The plan, starting September 1, caps bills at an estimated 75 to 100 dollars per student, and distributes costs to respective school sections.

Merton Honey Dies Suddenly in California

Fred Honey of Redlands reports the sudden death of his brother Merton on July 13 1953 in California. Merton left to California about forty years ago with his parents the late Mr and Mrs J G Honey. He is survived by two sisters Mrs W L Long of Yucaipa and Evelyn Potter of Los Angeles and by another brother Fred of Redlands.

Turk Broda Stars to Play Durham All Stars in Newcastle Friday

Turk Broda leads his National League All Stars to Newcastle Ball Park for a 7 p.m. Friday game against the Durham All Stars. Lineups feature Gus Mortson Danny Lewicki and other Toronto Maple Leaf veterans. Newcastle Lions Club hosts a Carnival after the game with new features and free parking east of the ball park.
