Conservative meeting in Orono endorses Dr Percy Vivian for Durham

A large audience attends the Progressive Conservative convention in Orono on July 9 as Dr Percy Vivian emerges as the leading candidate for Durham County in the August 4 provincial election. Delegates from every Durham association vote on officers and pledge broad support for the party under leader Col. George Drew.

Park St Sunday School Holds Annual Picnic

The Park St Sunday School held its annual picnic on Tuesday afternoon July 13. Children played games and races with prizes, tug of war sponsored by Mr. Staples, stunt performances by several classes, and a variegated program including a kitchen orchestra. Evening games pitted married women against single women and married men against single men, ending a day of fun and memories.

Kendal Commemorates Twelfth With Band Parade

On Monday July 12 Kendal Wendras Fife and Drum Band led a parade along the Main Street to Kendal Orange Hall where Rev S Littlewood addressed the crowd on why the Twelfth is remembered. Clarence Allin of Kinby presented a Parker pencil to Pte John Lowery on enlistment and spoke briefly.

Orono Women's Institute Honors Departing Members

About forty members gathered at Mr. R Rosborough’s home on July 8 to honor Mr and Mrs Rosborough Marilyn and Mrs Dean Carscadden who depart for Niagara Falls Western Canada Winnipeg and visit with Gordon Carscadden. The event featured a reading of a farewell address a gift of a sandwich server and a white purse plus an umbrella and songs in a warm sendoff.

Mary Ann Ard dies in Clarke at 84

Mary Ann Ard widow of Hugh Ard died at home in Clarke on June 28 in her 85th year. Born February 18 1859 near Orono she lived within a mile of her childhood home. She leaves son Robert Ard daughter Margaret Rutherford sister Minnie Cochrane seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral from her residence June 30 conducted by Rev S Littlewood Kirby United Church. Interment Orono Cemetery. Pallbearers listed.

Clarke Township Council Minutes July Meeting Discusses Bridges Grants

Regular Clarke Township Council session July 6 approves minutes from prior meeting. Items include road and CPR bridge clearance concerns, a $15 grant to the Horticultural Society, and payment of numerous town expenses including sheep killed by dogs and valuer trips.
