Mercer to again contest Durham riding in provincial election
The Durham Liberal Association met at Orono town hall with about seventy five delegates, nominating G. Mercer to again run for the provincial seat. Officers were elected, including Garnet Shields as president and M H Staples as vice president. Mercer thanked supporters and defended the government’s timing and finances amid postwar policy.

Thirty Three Grants Awarded by Northumberland Durham Council
Finance Committee recommended thirty three grants at the last regular session and the Counties Council approved them. Major grants of 2000 went to Canadian Red Cross Navy League of Canada Chinese War Relief Funds and Greek War Relief Funds. Other grants included Salvation Army 500 Canadian National Institute for the Blind 400 and Kinsmen Milk for Britain Fund 50.

The council authorized a five per cent pay increase for the counties clerk and treasurer, his assistant, the road engineer, the road office clerk, and the matron of the Counties Home, with the raise amounting to 150 for the clerk and treasurer and 50 for the Home matron. Rare Oddity in Hen Fruit at Orono Times Office
On July 6 in Orono a Barred Rock hen laid a freak egg measuring 9 inches around the long way and 6% inches around the center. The shell held a fully developed egg inside at the opposite end, yielding a yolk and white outside and a second small egg inside. The oddity is on display at the Orono Times for inspection.
