Canada extends compulsory military training age to 40

Ottawa announces an Order in Council extending the age range for conscription to men aged 20 to 40 who are single or widowed without children. The change, effective July 15 1940, aims to call about 25 000 men next month, with adjustments for volunteers and essential workers.

Clarke Council Reconsiders Blacksmith Shop Rental and ARP Use

Clarke Township council debated renting the blacksmith shop and approved ARP use in the council chamber under restrictions. A civic holiday was set for August 3 and local by law on dogs at large was to be prepared. Bills totalling many dollars were approved, and adjournment set for August 4. The session also touched on national defense conscription and monthly call-up figures.

Glenn Tamblyn Receives Reader's Digest Award at Orono

Glenn Tamblyn valedictorian at Orono Continuation School received the Sixth Annual Reader's Digest Association award for outstanding school work. He will get a one year honorary Reader's Digest subscription and an engraved certificate. The award, given since 1937, honors leadership potential and reading achievement.

Ontario Weed Menace Must Be Fought To Save Crops

John D. MacLeod of the Ontario Dept. of Agriculture warns weeds cost Ontario farmers twenty million dollars last year and threaten future losses. He calls for a special drive targeting wind-borne seeds and patches of Field Bindweed, Perennial Sow Thistle, Canada Thistle, Wild Carrot, Chicory, Hawkweeds, and Yellow Goat's Beard to prevent seeding and boost yields.

Carscadden Reunion in Orono with Annual Picnic

The Carscadden clan held its summer reunion at Memorial Park in Orono on Saturday July 4. About forty dined and one hundred attended supper after games. The group voted to meet again at the same site in 1943. Prizes went to eldest gentleman Dean Carscadden and eldest lady Mrs W Norris. Others recognized included Roy Carcadden as youngest child and W Leonard for largest carload, with guests from multiple towns and cities.

Woman's Missionary Society July Meeting Highlights

An afternoon gathering at Mrs. A. A. Drummond marked the July meeting of the Woman's Missionary Society with remarks by President Mrs. Littlewood. Members discussed missionary funds, returned workers, and a report on Dr. Simpson's Oshawa stewardship address. A sugarless lunch followed a social time.

Watch Presented To P G Perrin In Cowanville

Mrs Perrin received a wrist watch from the Cowanville community during her husband P O A G Perrin’s home leave. Perrin joined the R C A F in 1941 and served as a Wireless Air Gunner after training at No 1 B and G School Jarvis and No 1 Wireless School Montreal. He was commissioned May 28 1942.

Red Cross Meeting In Orono Promotes Sewing Efforts

The Orono Red Cross branch held its regular July meeting in Orange Hall with Rev. S. Littlement chairing. Volunteers continue Thursday quilting and sewing small boys outfits for Britain, seeking more help as June receipts show expenses and campaign income.
