Annual Meeting Horticultural Society to Meet Friday

Production of creamery butter fell in December with Ontario output at 4 387 600 pounds versus 4 474 700 a year ago. For 1942 total butter output declined 6.6 percent to 80 663 800 pounds. Durham County December 1942 output was 47 825 pounds down from 50 522 in 1941. January 1 stocks in Toronto warehouses and Ontario dairies fell sharply from 1942 to 1943.

W I Social Evening Eleven 500 Auction Orono

W I social evening at the Orange Hall Orono Friday January 15 drew two quilts. About fifty attended. Wm Cornish and Orme Gamsby shared the quilt draw. In 500 W E Davey won the men’s first prize with F J Hall as consolation. Ladies first prize went to Mrs Fred Cowan with Mrs Fred Wood as consolation. The event closed with lunch.

Four Children Now In Armed Forces

In the Oshawa Times Gazette issue dated Saturday January 16 a photo shows five children who once played soldier. Four of the young men are serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. They are the children of Mr and Mrs Orrin DeLong.

Butter Rationing Cut Set For February First

Wartime authorities announced by CBS radio that butter rationing will drop to two pounds per person for the next six weeks starting February 1. Spare coupons C5 and C6 extend to February 28, C7 and C8 run through February 28, and C9 expires March 14. other C coupons and timing details adjust accordingly.

Butter Coupons 5 and 6 Expire January 31st

Wartime Prices and Trade Board explains confusion over ration coupons for butter tea coffee and sugar. Tea coffee and sugar coupons are usable anytime after their valid date but Butter coupons five and six became due January 18 and expire January 31. The notice clarifies this does not apply to butter and notes ration books were printed before butter rationing began.

One man in Orono works as a meter reader earning 290 a year. He braves deep snow and cold winds while reading meters and tending Hydro business since September 1913. He hopes a generous citizen joins the Orono Hydro Commission to improve his prospects.

Bests Celebrate 56th Wedding Anniversary in Thornbury

Mr and Mrs Robert Best of Thornbury marked their 56th New Year’s Day wedding anniversary at Alfred Street home. The couple, formerly from Clarke Township and Charlotte Hallowell of Newtonville, have served Thornbury socially and municipally. Best was councillor and reeve for years before health issues. Their friends wish them continued health and happiness for many years. Canada’s radio production ranks praised, with Mayor Moore born 1919 noted for CBC broadcasts and producing Comrades in Arms.

Orone Telephone Company Holds Annual Meeting

The Orone Telephone Company Limited met at the town hall on Saturday afternoon January 16 with thirty shareholders present. Officers were elected for the year including President I H J Louch and Managing Director John Morris. The meeting urged operators to clear lines quickly for emergency calls to doctors and veterinarians.

The Department of National Defence counts 618318 voluntary enlistments from Sept 1939 to Oct 31 1942 and 683335 including R recruits who went active. Maritime regions show high rates with Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island at 41.5 percent and New Brunswick at 39 percent. Rural areas contribute strongly as 175 of 275 artillerymen and engineers in one draft came from countryside. Drumheller Alberta cites 1202 enlistments from a town of about 3000.
