Orono Red Cross Branch Holds Annual Meeting
The Orono Branch of the Red Cross Society met January 7 at Orange Hall with Rev. S Littlewood presiding. Officers were elected and reports highlighted quilts, garments, and cash donations totaling several hundred dollars. A Rental Officer appointment for Oshawa offices was announced by Wishart F. Spence.

Canadian Hostels Aid Soldiers in Wartime London
British war service hostels cared for Canadian troops in London. The Canadian Legion Hostel housed 1500 men with free laundry and inexpensive meals while Salvation Army and YMCA facilities offered beds and meals. The Lancaster of clubs included the Knights of Columbus run site and the Union Jack memorials and pocket guides for visitors.

Orono Chamber of Commerce Reports Progress and Plans
The Orono Chamber of Commerce held its annual meeting with fourteen attendees. Officers were elected including President R. E. Logan and Secretary C. T. Miller. The group noted gains from the Skinner Hunt Club visit, a $70 Red Cross boost, a fledgling dehydration plant, and plans for poultry markets and summer band trips, pending funds.

Large Quantity of Goods Shipped by Local Red Cross Branch
At the annual meeting of the Orono branch of the Red Cross Society Mrs. H. Dean reported goods shipped to the Ontario warehouse for 1942. The count includes 28 seaman stockings, 100 turtle neck sweaters, 308 pairs of socks, 115 mitts, 84 aero caps, 108 scarves, 51 gloves, 30 sleeveless sweaters, 46 helmets, 30 hospital towels, 207 bandages, 26 mothers gowns, 29 baby gowns, 25 baby blankets, 12 comfort bags for sailors, 248 garments for girls, 182 for boys, 2 afghans, 143 quilts and blankets, and 11 wool blankets donated by Park St Church W. A.

Ottawa Conference to map Canada's medical assets
The Ottawa conference opens January 20 to plan filling medical gaps in civilian and armed forces services. Representatives from health bodies will survey medical assets nationwide, assess distribution, and suggest adjustments for better service. The Canadian medical procurement and assignment board has supervised 800 medical officers under military call ups and replaced unsupervised enlistments.
