The Orphans from Bowmanville crushed Cobourg 9 to 3 in a midweek hockey clash. Orono led 8 to 1 by the end of the second period as D West Br West Robinson Erwin Mercer and Rowe starred in a lopsided affair.
In Newcastle, the Trenton Flyers defeated Crono 7 to 5 before about 250 fans. Crono’s Armstrong returned from three cracked ribs as Crono fought to tie late but Trenton pulled ahead with three unanswered goals in the final period.
Newcastle Arena hosts the Orphans Television Draw on Monday January 19 with Port Hope Redmen visiting. Tickets cost twenty five cents or seven for a dollar and all children accompanied by parents are admitted free for Young Canada Night.
A reader accuses the Statesman of bias in covering a hockey match between Bowmanville Barons and Orono Orphans. The letter claims Barons outplayed despite disadvantages, cites injuries, fights, and harsher penalties for Barons while praising Orono and criticizing Lindsay coverage.
The Orono United Church Choir met on Wednesday January 7 at Mr and Mrs A A Drummonds home for social time and business. Mrs A A Drummond was elected president with Mr Glen Allin as vice president and Miss Carolyn Jones as secretary treasurer. Members expressed thanks to Ma and Mrs Workman for leadership and Mr Workman for his musical contribution.
The Lange Memorial Chapel in Orono Cemetery, a Norman Gothic building with a copper steeple, limestone exterior, slate roof, and an interior of oak finishes and Haydite walls, was finished after May 1952 work by Bradford-Hoshal. Built by Dr. Ross Lang of Chicago as a memorial, the chapel may not be used for burial or services soon.
The Orono Band shifts from reed and brass to a full Brass Band adding an E flat soprano cornet a B flat Flugel horn and a B flat bass. Members paid about 500 for the instruments from summer earnings to improve the band for the community. Attend Friday’s card party to support them.
Rainey describes a pleasant hosted luncheon where Mrs. Irwin moved a unanimous vote of thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Drummond for their hospitality. The choir ended the evening on a cordial note.

The Clarke Township Council convened its 1953 inaugural meeting on Friday December 6 with Reeve J H Lowery and Councillors J T Brown and Harry Davey present. The session focused on financial caution and paving road improvements while honoring absent members and arranging a turkey banquet afterward.
