Capacity Crowd Attends Church Social Evening

A February 22 church social sponsored by Park Street United Church’s Woman’s Association drew a full house. The event featured acts from the Good Bible Class, a Park setting with flood lighting, and a closing moonlight scene. Net proceeds totaled 47.00 after expenses of 11.50.

Presbytery Skating Party Planned for February 28

The Park Street United Church youth group met February 25 with Lillian Hale chairing in the president’s absence. A lunch committee led by Dick Morton, Ruth Goode, and Gwen Tennant was formed for the Orono Arena skating event on February 28. The gathering featured reflections on refugees, poems, prayers, and a call to unite and pull together in 1946.

Rehabilitation Committee To Entertain Returned Men

The Clarke Township Rehabilitation Committee met in Orono on February 20 to plan support for returning service members. A township committee was formed with local residents, a finance chair and a program chair appointed, and the Honor Roll update was requested. The group will meet again March 13 and present plans to the larger committee.

Durham County Farm Forum finds diverse ideas on boosting efficiency

Fifteen forums with 285 attendees debated eliminating unnecessary steps between producer and consumer. Participants called for fewer middlemen and more mail order, central markets for bulk buying, and cooperative sellings. They criticized excessive advertising and urged grading simplification and more grading stations.

Orono Juveniles Fall to Powassan 16 to 2

Orono Juveniles suffered their heaviest loss of the season as Powassan defeated them 16 to 2. The setback followed a long around 230 mile bus trip in cold weather, with a next game scheduled for Saturday night to challenge northern rivals.

Patterson Golden Wedding Anniversary Celebrated in Kirby

Mr and Mrs Wm Patterson of Kendal celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the Wannan home in Kirby on February 12. Relatives from Garden Hill Elizabethville Kendal Kirby Orono and Toronto arrived with congratulatory letters flowers and gifts. The event featured touching speeches a surprise visit and a bountiful buffet social hour and tea serving by Mrs Patterson and Mrs Wannan Sr.

Orono Climbs as Ontario Eastern Champions Over Marmora

Orono Juveniles defeated Marmora 9 to 6 to clinch the Ontario Eastern Class CO title after an earlier 13 to 3 win at Madoc. Key scores came from Loveless Brown Jack Gibson and Junior West with strong Orono penalty play and a late Marmora surge. Marmora’s Bill Found left injured. Orono departs for Powassan for northern playoff action with a home return set for Saturday.

January Report of Counties Health Unit

The February meeting covers immunization efforts in January including 1385 inoculations and 456 vaccinations for diphtheria whooping cough and smallpox across 37 clinics in 24 rural and 2 town schools. Nursing staff performed 295 home visits and 44 classroom inspections amid equipment shortages and staff health issues.

Swine herd at Ontario agr college moved for disease research

Due to rhinitis in swine, the Ontario Agricultural College herd is turned over to Dr. A L MacNabb and staff from the Ontario Veterinary College for research. Prof R G Knox notes high quality standards will be kept, and no breeding stock sales will occur during the study.

Durham County Scholarships Funded by Canada Packers Leader

The Durham Junior Farmers receive C$1000 in scholarships from J S MacLean of Canada Packers for a two year Agricultural Course at Kemptville. Two Durham youths will receive awards in 1946 and two in 1947, based on club involvement and the judge BH A Summers. The program runs October to April, with farming duties in spring and summer. Mr McLean, a Durham native, often attends the provincial club banquet and honors local winners and coaches.
