Last Monday night the Orono Parents’ Discussion Group examined how modern life creates family tensions and how to counter youth seeking outside entertainment. They urged showing affection, offering in home activities, open houses for friends, family councils, and balanced supervision to keep children engaged.
A historical list outlines teen activities including church and Sunday School, school, self development lessons, hobbies for boys and girls, clubs, sports, and family companionship. It contrasts constructive pursuits with risky behaviors such as unsupervised parties, betting, idle gatherings, hidden obscene exchanges, and organized fighting gangs.
A large congregation attended Park Street United Church on February 12 for the dedication of a new pulpit and altar furnishings. Rev. dy E. Anderson spoke in morning and evening services, praising evangelistic efforts as the renovation ends aside from a few windows. Gifts were presented by Mrs. W. B. Coulter, Mrs. R. Knox, and Prof. F. A. Knox in memory of Knox family members.
The Governor General endorses a national Red Cross appeal for five million dollars opening March 1. Viscount Alexander lauds Canada’s Blood Transfusion Service and Red Cross Outpost Hospitals expanding medical aid, veterans’ care, and universal service beyond borders.
A St Saviors Parish Hall program drew a splendid turnout with performances by Miss Gwenneth Phasey Miss Jill Chapman and others. Moving pictures of local weddings skating carnivals and hockey teams were shown and a luncheon was served by Anglican Church ladies. The Canadian Red Cross announced free blood and plasma shipments by air and parachute to Yukon and Northwest Territories.
On January 25 a Sadie Hawkins dance was held at the school with games and dances enjoyed by all. Hot dogs and soft drinks were served and the party ended around eleven. A Parents Discussion met Monday night to talk about what children should do in their spare time. The High School Commencement is set for February 24 in the town hall. A St Valentine party on February 14 in the Middle School room featured prizes for dances and refreshments.
One hundred patients from the Brockville Mental Hospital will be moved to Cobourg’s Rowe estate next year. Welfare Minister Goodfellow announced the transfer, quashing Cobourg’s plan for a new mental hospital in the near term.
The Twin Counties entered a formal Northumberland and Durham Plowing Association at a Port Hope meeting. L H Winslow urged cooperation highlighting one good match as better than two poor. Northumberland entries previously joined Durham events. the joint group is now official.
J Howard Hancock Massey Harris dealer in Blw mianville sells his entire parts stock and machine shop to Stuart Morton and Son. The deal includes keeping the same staff under new management. A sale of remaining articles is advertised for Saturday February 25 at 12 noon. Hancock will run a Beaverton ranch to raise beef cattle and stay two months to train the new owners and ensure service for recent buyers.
Dr. C. W. MacCharles senior medical officer of health for Northumberland and Durham Counties Health Unit departed Cobourg for Korea to take up public health duties. He has been granted a year’s leave of absence and left January 31 for New York then to Korea. Reeve E R Woodyard Orono chairman of the counties Board of Health presented him with a brief case and thanked him for guidance since the unit’s formation in 1945.
The Canadian Red Cross Society ships streptomycin and other drugs to Europe, distributed by the League of Red Cross Societies. About one million Canadians belong to the senior Red Cross, with nearly 900000 in the Junior branch. Saskatchewan Division runs a Mother's Milk Service saving hundreds of newborn lives.
Orono Chamber of Commerce held a February meeting at the Orange Hall with ten members amid stormy weather. They discussed westbound mail delays to Toronto and floated an early morning overland option. Water supply concerns were raised as wells serve up to twenty users. A July sports day is planned with new entertainment to boost interest. The group adjourned to March 13.
Ontario is tallying 48 highway fatalities last month amid glare from headlights and inattention cited as major causes. Bluntly noting January’s slight drop from the year before authorities warn against reading long-term trends, as past months showed reversals.
The Orono Bantams opened their two game series with Bob Caypeon, leaving the visitors nine goals ahead. Orono’s midget team shows potential as a championship contender in the Waurelis playdowns, with close hockey and forthcoming matchups against Hastings. Orono scorers listed include Hall, West, Boyd, Armstrong, and Foster. The return game with Hastings is set for Thursday in Hastings.
Clarke Township fights through snow with two diesel plows. A scheduled modification for the Goderich undercarriage delayed plowing as the tractor plow proved to lose traction and power, prompting the supplier to install changes at their expense to achieve economical snow dispersal within a few days.
