Township Council approved buying a new Caterpillar Motor Grader with snowplow attachments for 21 820 including trade-in of the old unit. Tender from Champion was 19 500, subject to Highway Department approval. two up-to-date graders will be operated.
Police Chief Herbert Flintoff called Oshawa Christmas driving record the worst in history. Despite warnings and patrols, accidents rose with drunk drivers and near-drunk river incidents. One man died on Christmas Eve and property damage exceeded $2500.
Orono Arena opened on Christmas night with strong attendance for public skating. Hockey and skating programs commence with a winter season schedule for youths ages 8 to 14, plus PeeWee Bantam Atom squads and public skating. Boys may still register with the Orono Amateur Athletic Association.
On Tuesday December 22 the rono Public School held its Christmas party in Oddfellow's Hall. Every grade contributed to a varied program including piano and guitar solos, ballet, choral numbers, puppet shows and duets. The afternoon brought room to room gift exchanges ending the term with a concert finale of God Save The Queen.
The Orono Orphans prep for their grand opening at the Orono Arena this Friday hosting the Durham Hockey Club of Oshawa and other area teams. They recently defeated Bowmanville Town league all stars 112 to boost confidence ahead of January eighth games.
In Orono, fifteen boys gathered at the Orono Arena to establish the Orono Juvenile Hockey Club. Practices are set for Fridays 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., with Phil Long and Jimi Garnsby coaching and managing. Contact Jack Moffat for details.
The Massey Foundation pledges 1.5 million dollars to build and equip a graduate residential college at the University of Toronto on Devonshire Place and Hoskin Avenue. Vincent Massey outlines a senior scholar led by Fellows, with a link to the business world, aiming to attract Canadian scholars with selective international excellence.
R Ruddock Waddell, 78, longtime Orono lawyer of 33 years, died in Oshawa hospital after a career beginning in Toronto and a return to Orono in 1926. Born in Orono he studied at the University of Toronto and was called to the bar in 1908. Active in the community his funeral was set for 2 30 p m at the Orono United Church.
The Pee Wees under 10 hold practice Saturday at 10 00 and 41 00. Atom turnout was only two last Saturday. many more boys exist. Bantams under 14 train Wednesdays at 6 30 and Saturdays at 11 00. Orono Club reports two good practices this year and invites any boy to register this Saturday morning for Canada sport participation.
Orono Hi Teens held an end of year meeting praising the Hydro service after two ice storms with few outages. Members noted December accounts were approved and joked about a New Year Eve dance featuring a 50.50 prize draw and buffet lunch.
Ontario Department of Highways reports ongoing work on a 46 mile section of Highway 401 from Newcastle to Brighton with completion targeted for next Fall and Port Hope extension in late Spring. Construction includes by passes, bridges, culverts, rock and earth excavation, and extensive paving for a total estimated cost around 35 million dollars. The project aims to ease through traffic and boost tourism along the lake shore while reducing congestion in Brighton Newcastle.
Five people died in traffic accidents across the United Counties during the three day Christmas holiday period. Three Trenton youths Robert Thompson 18 Ralph Jackson 20 and Gerald Ostrom 28 were killed Christmas night when their car rolled over and struck a telephone pole four miles west of Trenton. Also on Christmas night a Toronto girl Stavroula Strifteela 29 was killed.
The Junior boys of the Sunday School staged the story of Good King Wenceslas in a lively program for all. A performer then led the audience in Jingle Bells as candy bags were distributed.
Weekend ice storm left trees and lines coated in ice disrupting hydro and telephone service. By Monday 4 30 pm most services were restored though damage along Station Street was severe. Rural heating and travel were disrupted with OPP advising limited highway use. repairs will take months.
