Orono residents will greet Santa at the Orono Fire Hall this Saturday afternoon from 1 30 to 3 30 p m The event marks the village s annual Santa visit with the chamber arranging civic participation and preparations for a possible January meeting venue and winter carnival postponement discussed at a recent meeting.

Orono Fire Chief Warns of Holiday Fire Hazards

Fire Chief Ross Mercer urged extra care during the holidays noting Christmas trees decorations and gift wrap increase fire risk. He warned parents to supervise children and to hire a responsible babysitter, citing legal penalties under Canada’s Criminal Code for abandoning a child.

Turkey Shoot Draws Large Crowd at Orono Fish and Hunt Club

On Sunday afternoon a big crowd attended the Orono Fish and Hunt Club turkey shoot despite fair weather. Fifteen turkeys and ten chickens were awarded with Vance Allen of Millbrook the top winner taking three birds. Other winners included Bill Werry Harvey Partner Malcolm McKenzie Wayne Bailey and more. The event closed with a shotgun draw won by the author. Mrs. Marshall Keast sold sandwiches and coffee with proceeds benefiting the club.

Hi-Cs Plan New Years Party In Orono

The Orono Hi-Cs met December 13 in the Orono United Church Upper Christian Education Room. Mr. and Mrs. Aslett led the first official meeting as new councillors and the group sang Christmas carols. The devotional by Anne Gilbank and Dorothy Dunlop centered on The Seven Days of Christmas. Committees were formed to plan the New Years Eve dance and refreshments followed.

Orono Couples Club Hosts Box Social Dance Night

The Orono Couples Club held a dance and box social on a Saturday evening in the church basement. About twelve to fifteen couples attended with tables arranged and festive Christmas centerpieces. Nine local musicians provided music as two auctioneers, Les Aslett and Bob Johnston, sold boxed lunches to the highest bidders who then chose a lunch partner.

Prize Winners Of Oddfellows Turkeys Dance Night

At the service club dance, the Oddfellows announced turkey prizes won by residents including Mrs M Birch of Orono, Michael Watson of Orono, Ruth Found of Orono, Ruby Lane of Bowmanville, Alice Chater of Leskard, Fred Wood of Oshawa, D A MacGregor of Newcastle, and others from Tyrone Pontypool and Toronto.

Road Expenditure Totals Revealed by County Engineer

Engineer John Moorhouse reported to the Council of the United Counties of Durham and Northumberland that over 1.3 million dollars had been spent on road work to Oct 31 with 935,466 eligible for subsidy. He projected year end spending to reach 1,478,141. Expenditures included 454,216 for road construction 198,508 for bridges and culverts 224,251 for maintenance, with the rest on machinery and overhead.

Clarke Township Council Concludes Year With Retirements and Plans

Clarke Township Council held its final meeting of the year. Retiring Reeve Walkey and Councillor Foster were praised for their service. Foster signaled a possible run for council again later, while residents discussed road plans near Orono and a new snow plow purchase. The baselines, subsidies, and winter works items dominated the session with tenders for a municipal well and water system projects noted.

Orono Public School Holds Final Speaking Contest

At Orono United Church on Friday December 11 at 2 00 p m the annual public speaking contest featured eight contestants from Grades 4 8 with Rev B Long and Miss E Raikes as adjudicators Ellen Millson of Grade 8 won first speaking on Churchill the Man of the Century Michael Carman finished second and Dennis McKenzie third Ellen Millson will represent the school at the zone competition in February 1965
