Two Bank Bandits Sentenced to Five Years Each

Convicted bank robbers Leonard Lauzon and James Hutchinson were sentenced to five years in Cobourg penitentiary for armed robbery of The Canadian Bank of Commerce in Orono. Hutchinson receives consecutive terms with a prior three year sentence from Peterborough court. Police recovered about $1,500 when arrest followed an Oshawa hotel raid on Oct 21.

Orono Orphans Rally To Beat Cobourg For Second Place

The Orono Orphans defeated league leaders Cobourg Comets six to three to move into second place. Dean West led with three goals while Raye West Charles Armstrong and Welsh added Crone goals. Cobourg’s Fisher Medhurst and Dowell scored in the first period as penalties remained even and Orono dominated after the opening frame.

Christmas Meeting Of Orono Women’s Institute

The Orono Women’s Institute held its Christmas meeting with Mrs. Fred Bowen presiding. Plans were made to fill Christmas boxes for the sick and shut-in. Mr. Cecil Carveth of Newcastle presented three films followed by carol singing and a lunch served by the executive.

Nativity scene returns to the Orono United Church lawn for a second year drawing visitors who travelled to view it in 1953. The display features the manger wise men Babe and Mary and is floodlit at night for maximum effect.

Orono Orphans Protest Upheld Against Port Hope Redmen

The Ontario Hockey Association sustained the Orono Orphans protest over Port Hope Redmen. Peters and Holden were suspended for the season and the protested game was awarded to Orono after findings that the players were not Port Hope residents or properly registered. The Orono manager warned of further protests if ineligible players appear.

Orono Bank Adopts New Weekend and Evening Hours

The Orono branch of the Canadian Bank of Commerce will change hours starting January 8. Weekday hours run 10:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Friday hours extend to 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The branch will be closed Saturdays and will stay open on Wednesdays instead of a half day.

Athletic Association Sells Season Skating Tickets

The Orono Amateur Athletic Association under Mr. Clifford Winter opens season ticket sales at The Times Office to fund rink operations and hockey for village youths. Single tickets cost 3.00 dollars and family children tickets 5.00 dollars. donations welcomed as the Orono Skating Club plans events.

Santa Arrives in Orono for Saturday Party

Santa Claus will visit Orono this Saturday December 18 at 3 00 pm at Township Hall. Children from the district are invited for a film and a meet with St Nicholas. The Heather Social Club sponsors the event with help from local businessmen and will distribute fruit and candy gifts.

Air Cadets Receive Uniforms in Orono Squadron

The Orono Air Cadet Squadron gains loaned uniforms from the Air Force with boots to be purchased by cadets. Officials from Trenton praised the setup after inspection. The unit plans to enter the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association winter events and may send cadets to Clinton for free summer training.

Newcastle student wins three awards at OAC dinner

J. E. Brown of Newcastle received three honors at the Tri-College semi-annual dinner of the Ontario Agricultural College Ontario Veterinary College and Macdonald Institute in Guelph. He earned the F J Morrow Foundation Scholarship worth 800 dollars a first year diploma bursary and an outstanding student award from the Ketchum Company. Bowmanville Legion plans officer elections at the December 19 meeting. Nominated are Ross McKnight and Ale Mavin for president with Jack Knight seeking vice president. Sergeants at arms candidates are Bob King and Ernie Perfect. Prenatal Classes Led by Cobourg Health Unit

Cobourg reports nine prenatal classes for expectant mothers taught by Miss R. Cunningham senior nurse of the Northumberland Durham Health Unit. Participants were referred by family physicians and learned preparation for child bearing with relaxation exercises. Dr. Charlotte M. Horner urges prenatal patients to seek instruction from local public health nurses with physician approval.

Orono High School hosts its annual dance this Friday at the Township Hall. The Christmas themed decorations include lighted trees and winter scenes. Paul Minicola’s Orchestra of Peterborough will play from nine to one, providing the music for the event.

Auto theft in Orono ends with Peterborough recovery

Ed Graham reported his car stolen from Orono on Friday night December 10. Police traced it abandoned in Peterborough, motor recovered by Saturday morning and returned to Mr. Graham as investigators continue.

Badminton Club To Be Formed In Orono First Of Year

A revival of badminton in Orono is planned with the Orono Armouries leased by the police trustees. Thirty five residents have signed up, with youth welcome. first play night set for Wednesday January 5 to organize the club for the new year.

Christmas Meeting Of W A And W Ms Well Attended

The Orone Woman's Association and Afternoon Auxiliary of the Women's Missionary Society held a Christmas meeting Tuesday afternoon with a large turnout. President Mrs. Ervin Rainey chaired the W A session, opening with a Christmas Carol and a prayer. Minutes were read, bills paid, and the bank balance stood at 950 dollars. A nominating slate was accepted. a committee was formed to serve the choir after the program. A life membership was approved for one member, and funding for front door fixtures at the parsonage was authorized. Mrs. Rainey thanked all for a successful year. Continued on page eight.

Members of Group C.G.LT conducted a sea service with candle lighting and a strong congregation present. The report notes the evening featured prayers and a reverent atmosphere as part of the United Service gathering.
